Wall Basics
  • Most exterior walls are framed with 2x6s because
they are the primary weight bearing walls of the
house. Additionally they need the extra space
for the insulation of the house.
  • Interior walls are framed with 2x4s because they
arent weight bearing, and they dont need
    insulation.

Sill Plates
  • When making a wall, the bottom piece of wood is
made out of a sill plate.
  • Sill plates are pressure treated pieces of wood
because they sit right upon the concrete
  • The pressure treatment is used to help prevent
    rot, bugs, and water damage.
  • You can tell a sill plate from other wood because
    it often appears green.

5
Studs
  • Studs are the pieces of wood that make up the
    wall.
  • The are attached to the sill plates and the top
pieces on a sixteen inch center basis.
  • This means that the center of one stud is 16
    inches from the next.

6
After the wall is made
  • Once the wall is made, it is moved into place and
    plumbed.
  • When plumbing a wall it needs to be level both
    horizontally and vertically.
  • Once it is plumb, it needs to be fastened to the
concrete, and kept plumb while the other walls
    are being constructed.
