- Nick thinks his grandpa is the nicest person in
the world. When Grandpas birthday came this
year, Nick wanted to do something very special
for him. He decided to throw a party in his
grandfathers honor. - Nick got everyone in his family to help with
the party. Because he thinks his parents are
good artists, Nick put them in charge of
decorations. Since he believes that no one bakes
better cakes and cookies than his sister Jen,
Nick asked her to make a fancy birthday cake.
And because everyone thinks that Nick is the best
organizer in the family, Nick put everything
together, even the songs, games, and surprises.
- As the guest arrived at the house, Jen put all
the presents for Grandpa on a table. Nick helped
everyone hide. When Grandpa walked in the door,
they all yelled, Surprise! Nick thought
Grandpa had never looked happier. - After the guests left, everyone in Nicks
family helped clean up even Grandpa, who had
never stopped smiling! This was the best
birthday I ever had! he told them all. -

9Fact and Opinion
- A fact is something that can be seen or proved.
- An opinion is a persons thoughts or feelings.
- Clue words such as think and believe can help
readers know that a sentence states an opinion.
10Turn to page 156-157 in your book.
- Read the paragraph in the blue box on page 157.
- When I look at the first sentence, I see the
words I think. This tells me that baseball has
an interesting history is someones opinion. An
opinion cannot be checked because different
people think different things are interesting. - The second sentence is about something that
happened in history. Dates can be checked in a
reference book, and if they are correct, the
sentence states a fact.

fiction that combines a made-up story with real
events from the past. - Listen as I read the first four paragraphs.
- I know the Golden Gate Bridge is real. I know
it opened in 1937, so this story happens before
then. The boy telling the story sounds like a
real boy. I think this story is historical
fiction because it is about events that really
happened, but the characters are not real people.
- You should listen to historical fiction to enjoy
it and to learn about the time, people, places,
and events from history that are discovered. - Remember that facts are statements that can be
seen or proved and opinions are what people
believe, think, or feel. - Historical fiction includes many facts to make
the setting seem real. The characters may state
