1
Exploring Multiple perspectives of Autonomous
System Mapping (M-PASM)
  • WP2d - Mohammed El-Beltagy
  • CLAES

2
Background
  • M-PASM is tool that allows the for Multiple
    perspectives of Autonomous System Mapping
  • The tool can access and retrieve evegrows DIMES
and CAIDAs Skitter daily released AS edges
  • The tools facilitates data validation of AS
numbers through comparison with the databases of
the ?ve regional Internet registries (RIRs)
  • M-PASM can allow for mapping AS numbers to their
apparent geographic locations and hence allows
for constructing a picture of global AS
    connectivity
  • It implements topology analysis features that
allows for temporal comparisons of the evolution
    of the AS topology

3
Key Features
  • Automatic parsing of DIMES and CAIDA data for any
    given date
  • Mapping AS numbers to their corresponding
    countries and RIR
  • Tracking changed in AS number over time
  • Graph decomposition
  • K-shell Analysis
  • Jelly-Fish Analysis
  • Visualization
  • A number of network layouts
  • Changes in K-shell distribution

4
Why another visualization tool?
  • Tools currently available are not well suited to
answer questions that are relevant to decision
    makers
  • How valid is the collected data?
  • How is one country connected to another country?
  • What is the central AS within a particular
    country?
  • How scale free is AS connectivity within a
    country?
  • How is internet penetration evolving in a
    particular part of the world?

5
Data Validation
  • We obtain AS number country allocations at any
point in time from the five Regional Internet
    Registries (RIRs)
  • ARIN (ftp.arin.net/pub/stats/arin/)
  • RIPE (ftp.ripe.net/ripe/stats/)
  • APNIC (ftp.apnic.net/pub/apnic/stats/apnic/)
  • LACNIC (ftp.lacnic.net/pub/stats/lacnic/ )
  • AfriNIC (ftp.afrinic.net/pub/stats/afrinic/)
  • Resolve anomalies using the their whois database
    servers
  • We check for changes in AS numbers during the
    measurement period in question

6
Data Validation
7
Richness of Measurement Analysis
  • AS connectivity in
  • Germany

8
Country to Country Connectivity
  • CAIDA

9
Country to Country Connectivity
  • DIMES

10
K-shell analysis
11
K-shell layout
12
K-shell layout
  • Color only US AS nodes

13
K-shell Analysis
  • Visualization of changes over time

14
Going Forward
  • Including the number of IPs associated with ASes
    in the visualization
  • Include Route Views data
  • Inferring AS relationships
  • customer-provider, peering, or sibling
  • Incorporate more analysis metrics Joint degree
    distribution
  • Rich Club connectivity
  • Betweenness
  • Spectrum
  • Answering questions related to internet
penetration and growth in different parts of the
    world
