Biography
  • Born in Aracataca, Columbia on March 6 1928
  • Lived with his Grandparents until he was 8 years
    old
  • Graduated from a private Jesuit high school in
    1946
  • In 1947 Marquez enrolled in law school at the
    National University in Bogotá

  • On April 9 1948 Jorge Eliecer Gaitan was
    assassinated which started a bloody upheaval,
    while Marquez was studying law
  • This caused the National University to be closed
    because of the La Violencia, a civil war between
    the conservatives and the liberals

  • Marquez left Bogotá and resumed his study of law
    at the University of Cartagena
  • While studying he discovered his PASSION for
    writing
  • He moved to the city of Barranquilla to work at
    the El Heraldo and joined a group of passionate
    writers
  • 1954 accepted a position as a reporter at the El
    Espectador
  • In 1955 Marquez published his first short story,
    Monologue of Isabel Watching It Rain in
    Malacondo and his first novel Leaf Storm

  • Marquez began writing The Story of a Shipwrecked
    Sailor in 1955, which was in 14 installments of
    the El Espectador
  • The Columbian government shut down the newspaper,
    El Espectador.
  • So Marquez remained in Europe where he wrote No
    One Writes to the Colonel

  • In 1957 Marquez returned from Europe and began
    working as a journalist in Caracas
  • Two years later, after Fidel Castros revolution
    in Cuba, Marquez joined the Cuban governments
    news agency, Prensa Latina.

    with his wife and son to Mexico City
  • Within the first year, he had 3 books published
    No One Writes to the Colonel, In Evil Hour, and
    Big Mamas Funeral.
