How do we define cultural identity?

• Language-
• Japanese language is difficult to learn and
  write. All Japanese words are written using a
  system that has 46 symbols. Foreign words are
  usually written in a second system that has 46
  different symbols. Adult literacy rate exceeds 99

• Clothes-
• Traditional dress is a long, loose fitting robe
  called a Kimono, a waist sash (obi) and flat
  shoes (zori). Shoes are always removed before
  going into a house.

• Religion-
• Many Japanese people are not religious but
  many combine the two main religions, using Shinto
  for weddings and Buddhism for funerals.

• Hobbies-
• Sumo wrestling, kendo fencing, karate, origami
  (paper folding), flower arranging and miniature
  bonsai (plant growing).

• Personality-
• A high standard of living
• A healthy attitude towards hard work
• A willingness to try new ideas
• A wish to be part of a team
• Loyal to their family
• A wish for Japan to succeed as a country

• -The way businesses are run has helped the

• -Co-operation between employers and workers
• -Co-operation between large companies and small
