2Bollington Paragliding Club
- We are a small group of enthusiastic paragliding
pilots who are able to share the opportunity for
excitement, thrills, pleasure and challenge,
offered by the sport of paragliding. We operate
at Barton Aerodrome, Manchester. - Usually.
- Thats because sometimes we actually do fly
elsewhere, some of our members get together, and
take a flying holiday abroad. We also fly at
other UK sites. Sometimes, they all come back! - Being a BHPA member usually means it is very cost
effective to simply join other clubs on a day
ticket (if available), or annually. - Thats straight from our website, which is
www.bollingtonpc.org.uk

3Barton airfield
- We normally fly from Barton airfield, which,
since Peel Holdings bought it, is now a CAP700
airfield. This means that there are now full time
staff, and a host of rules and regulations. Some
of which, actually apply to us!
Here we are! (The car park is at

5Pilot Training
- The training schedule with us, is standard BHPA
fare (at BHPA.co.uk). This is NOT to be confused
with any other BHPA! (some other money-making
groups try to use the goodwill good name of our
national governing body to line their pockets). - We are not a profit making club, all we charge
club members is enough to keep us flying. For
example, our annual subs have stayed the same for
the last three years! - This makes us a very cost effective way into the
sport. If the weather is not ideal, then you
dont have to slog back down the hill, you get
driven off the field! All your skills learned
with us are applicable to hill flying (youd need
a suitable crossover course). - We need to fuel the Landrover and replace any kit
that needs replacing (includes state of the art
gliders). - You need no equipment to join, other than stout
boots, without hooked eyes. And some form of
overall, is a very good idea. In the morning, the
grass can be very wet.
We are an officially recognised BHPA school. We
are agents for Windtech paragliders
6Pilot Training
- The levels of pilot rating are
- Elementary Pilot (EP)
- The first level of progression
- Club Pilot (CP)
- This means that you may fly without the
supervision of an Instructor - Pilot (P)
- Now arent you getting carried away?
- Advanced Pilot (AP)
- Whats next, the Himalayas?
7The Parachute Landing Fall (PLF)
The first thing you'll be taught is the PLF. This
needs to be demonstrated on the ground (we have a
large plastic sheet, to keep those nice new
overalls clean!). This is a skill that will be
with you for life. It is used to dissipate excess
energy from a hard landing. The Parachute Landing
Fall consists of five points of contact1)
Balls of the feet.2) Calf muscle.3) Thigh
muscle.4) Buttocks.5) Lat's.
8And heres how it looks in practice
9Your first flight
- Will be using our Waterbird round canopy. You may
have seen this type of canopy on holiday. - Once youve mastered the PLF, and have more
experience of flying, you will be progressed onto
our training square, the famous pink blamanche
(next slide)!

11Other squares may come next.
12But, you will soon be shown the benefit of high
performance, modern gliders
This is the type you may have seen on hills. This
canopy is our Windtech Tonic club canopy. We have
two, a small and a medium (how many pies do you
eat?)
13- We get the occasional visitor
14And we do get out from time to time

15Not forgetting the star of our show
The Landrover, that is!
16On this CD, there are a lot offiles to
browseenjoy.
- An MP4 file, called Stevo.MP4 is an especially
fun movie, a flight in our New Wave 350 from the
pilots viewpoint. (Dont have the software to
trim it, nor to insert it into this
presentation.) It just came out really well. - Shame the pilot missed the spot on landing
- A couple more for your delectation

17How (much), where when?
- First of all, we try to keep our costs at a
minimum, so it changes every year. Talk to our
Chief Flying Instructor (better yet, get on his
right side, and buy him a cup of tea!) - At Barton Aerodrome (Google maps)
- On Saturday Sunday morning, 0645hrs in the car
park (bank holidays, too, usually). Through
summer only (usually runs from April to September
ish, check our website). Look for our Landrover.
After that, look up. Before 0800, you may just
walk over to us onto the airfield for a chat,
wed love to meet you. - Disclaimer We reserve the right to refuse
membership, to change the rules at anytime, and
to otherwise do as we see fit, in the interests
of everyones safety, and the sport in general!
So there!
