1. Introduction
  • Media literacy education is to introduce the
    attributes and impact of media, and most
    importantly, access to various forms of media.
  • The pervasion and accessibility of information
    technology has highlighted the importance of
    using the media sensibly and purposively.

  • The digital communication technology with its
    mobile learning access has a great impact on
    changing the ways of teaching and learning, such
    as WiMAX, a newly developed digital and wireless
    communication technology.
  • The main foci the use WiMAX for distant
    learning, its role in the content and practice of
    media literacy education, and teachers role in
    the practice of media literacy education based on
    a student-centered approach.

2. The Nature of WiMAX and Its Advantages for
Distant Learning
  • WiMAX is a wireless network used for the
    worldwide communication with access to
    long-distance and high-speed transmission, a wide
    range of networks, and audio-visual supportive
    services.
  • The use of WiMAX will expand the scope of distant
    learning for bringing openness, interaction,
    convenience, variety, flexibility and immediacy.
  • The effective teaching can be facilitated by
    providing interaction, and the use of WiMAX will
    help to promptly provide an interactive learning
    environment.

  • The distant learning should be based on a
    problem-oriented learning approach (Price,2003)
    for helping to cultivate students adaptability,
    flexibility, and develop their critical thinking
    and problem-resolved skills (Newman,2003).
  • The use of WiMAX mobile learning tools
    (e.g.lap-top computers) will facilitate the
    practice of problem-based and student-centered
    learning (students can focus on resolving the
    problems derived from the real life situations by
    using WiMAX mobile tools to seek for learning
    support and resources from WWW websites).

3. The Role of WiMAX in the Content of Media
Literacy Education
  • The content of media literacy education
    understanding the modes of media, critical
    thinking of and reflection on media, having
    access to and use of media.
  • The purpose of media literacy education students
    are liberated and empowered with the skills to
    prepare themselves for the participation and
    reconstruction of healthy media community.
  • Using WiMAX for learning media will not only
    provide learners with access to various forms of
    media and consultation with information source,
    but also help them to develop the skills of
    information production and transmission.

4. The Use of WiMAX in the Practice of Media
Literacy Education
  • Using WiMAX for students problem-based distant
    learning
  • 1) The practice of media education should be
    focused on developing learners meta-cognition,
    so they can make use of questioning,
    self-reflective thinking, dialectical, and
    decision-making skills during the process of
    learning.
  • 2) Using WiMAX communication tools for learning
    media will help to achieve the problem-based
    learning, as learners are encouraged to derive
    problems from the real-life situations, use
    problems for planning the learning sequence. In
    doing so, it will not only help students to
    develop meta-cognitive skills, but also change
    their role from a passive learner to a
    self-directed learner.

  • Teachers role in using WiMAX for the practice of
    student-centered approach in the teaching of
    media
  • 1) Teachers need to understand and include
    students media experiences.
  • 2) Teachers need to provide interactive learning
    opportunities for students.
  • 3) Teachers need to consider and respect
    students individual cultural and learning
    differences.
  • 4) Teachers need to co-operate with classroom
    teaching for problem-based distant learning.

5. Conclusions
  • The use of WiMAX for media literacy education is
    to integrate the network resources as a back-up
    support and the mobile communication system as a
    medium for information access, transmission and
    production.
  • Using WiMAX for media literacy education within
    the context of distant learning, teachers should
    be aware of their mediating and multiple roles
    while planning and conducting various kinds of
    teaching and learning activities.
  • Have access to the installation of technology
    along with the support of wireless communication
    tools, teachers expertise and commitment, and
    the recognition of government educational boards.

  • How to use WiMAX for aiding and enhancing
    students learning during a school field trip.
  • Students can connect to the classs website for
    reviewing the work and questions prepared for
    this trip.
  • Students can browse the information related to
    what they have learned from the speaker and
    visiting site for helping themselves to derive
    more questions.
  • Students can consult with other source persons.
  • Students can record the visual and audio
    information they have learned from this trip, and
    transmit to the classs website for the follow-up
    discussion and learning.
