Braking Forces
6
Braking Forces
  • About 40-45 lbs required by user for day to day
driving, at pedal 8-9 inches of travel
  • Translates to 10/22 (45) 18-20 lbs at hand
    controls 15 inches of travel
  • Bar should be able to withstand at least 100 lbs
    for safety

7
Gas Forces
  • About 20 lbs required to fully depress gas pedal,
2 inches of travel at pedal
  • Mechanical advantage is 2.5x, so 5 inches of
travel at about 8 lbs (possibly adjustable)
  • Cable and connections should be able to withstand
at least 40 lbs for safety

Use ¼ values for sustained use
8
Likely Failure Points
  • Cable connections must be securely fastened.
  • Cable must be designed so that it will not break
should not be a problem with only 20 lbs of
    force on cable
  • Main bar must be securely connected to pivot
    point and existing bar

9
Possible Design/Manufacturing Problems
  • Main bar should be securely fastened, possibly
welded in the same fashion as existing brake
pedal this will make controls more steady
  • Cable may experience stretching (creep) should
design for this so cable can be tightened if/when
    necessary.

Weld to existing pivot bar or constrain so that
sideways motion of handle is limited
Cylindrical sleeve

Design/Manufacturing Considerations
Installation and usage
  • Welding would require professional installation
  • Other parts could be installed with standard
    tools.
  • Existing pedals would be available to
non-disabled users. (handle would move when brake
    pedal depresses, though)
  • Design so that controls do not interfere with
    existing levers
  • Test to insure that parking/startup can be
achieved with one hand. (using parking brake)

11
Action Items
  • Decide on specific design of grip/ gas lever
    (consult with ID guys)
  • Design method of cable connection at gas pedal.
    (sleeve/bracket, drilled hole)
  • Finalize proportions/ materials/ fasteners
  • Begin building prototype
  • Begin CAD drawings.
