Standardization Management Plan (SMP)

• A Strategy for Standardization
• Standardization Management as a through life
  process is a discipline used to support a
  projects TLMP.
• Standardization Management and standardization
  issues need to be identified at the earliest
  stages of a projects acquisition life cycle.
• From the outset, the IPTL should address
  Standardization Management issues by developing a
  Standardization Strategy for the project in
  consultation with the other stakeholders (e.g.
  those who have an input to the Project including
  capability managers (the DECs as sponsors),
  system acquirers and equipment support functions
  (DES Organization), operational users (the Front
  Line Commands (FLCs)) and Industry).
• The Implementation Plan
• The implementation plan identifies the main tasks
  needed to create and apply the project's
  standardization strategy.
• This document is to be reviewed towards the end
  of each phase of the CADMID/CADMIT cycle ready
  for application in the next and subsequent phase.
  
• A chart of the tasks in relation to the
  CADMID/CADMIT cycle. This may need to be tailored
  to take account of the different standardization
  strategies and acquisition options e.g PFI

Maturity Model

• Maturity Model
• Background
• Formed as part of the AOF Guidance, DStan
  constructed a Standardization Maturity Model
  (SMM) to help communicate Standardization
  Management to the wider Acquisition community
• DStan decided to construct a Maturity Model
  which was based on the Standardization Process.
• The concept of the MM has been used as a
  behavioural model, it has several distinct
  advantages over a prescriptive or defined
  procedure
• Each Team can compare their behaviour with the
  model at any stage.
• Movement between each stage can be at various
  speeds.
• The model can also be used as a continual
  improvement process.
• The MM can be revised as the Acquisition
  community moves forward.
• Essentially it became a very positive tool and a
  technique of asking definitive questions - not
  just about the models original intended use of
  defining where our customers perceive themselves
  within the models framework

Commonality

• Commonality - The state achieved when the same
  doctrine, procedures or equipment are used.
• Use of common items e.g. NATO fuels, batteries,
  and generators see Support Solutions Envelope
  (DLO) and Commonality Gatekeeper IPTs responsible
  for introduction to service of specific
  equipment.
• Variety reduction for economy in manufacture,
  servicing and stores inventory.
• Use of common test equipment.
• Enables collaborative projects between nations.
• Use of commercially available items.
• Increase in purchasing power through procurement
  of greater quantities of fewer types of item.

Interchangeability

• Interchangeability - The ability of one product,
  process or service to be used in place of another
  to fulfil the same requirements.
• Same functional physical characteristics so
  equivalent in performance durability.
• Assists in managing obsolescence.
• Requires managing interdependencies/ interfaces,
  such as between
• black boxes
• modules
• items
• assemblies and sub assemblies

Compatibilty

• Compatibility - The suitability of products,
  processes, or services for use together under
  specific conditions to fulfil relevant
  requirements without causing unacceptable
  interactions.
• Use of material of a type compatible with
  explosives.
• Compatibility includes functional, dimensional
  (metric imperial units)and environmental
  elements.
• Use of COTS components/ products (and standards).
• Use of generic products such as Petrol, oils
  lubricants.
• Data exchange, interfaces/ interdependencies.
• Benchmarking, use of best practice, LFE
  communication.
