with the FAFSA and the Profile.
  • Students are fairly technically savvy.
  • Last year's electronic workshop provided a close
look at the FAFSA on the Web. This session will
look at the most important websites you and your
students will need to begin the college and
    financial aid application process.

Test Drive the FAFSAat the FAFSA Demo Site
  • http//fafsademo.test.ed.gov
  • Great site for counselors, students, parents to
get comfortable filing the FAFSA electronically
before using the site www.fafsa.ed.gov to
    complete federal aid application.
  • The information you enter in the demo is saved
only for the day you are entering the data. All
information is cleared from the database nightly.
The 2002-03 FAFSA will be available on the demo
    site as of 12/3/01.

8
From the FAFSA demo site
  • Complete "submit" a FAFSA or renewal FAFSA
  • Make corrections
  • Check application status
  • Sign applications electronically
  • Request duplicate SARs
  • Search for federal school codes
  • http//fafsademo.test.ed.gov
  • User name eddemo
  • Password fafsatest

9
www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • The site where the actual FAFSA is completed.
Notice it doesn't have "CPS Web Applications Test
System" on bottom left corner as did the
    www.fafsademo.test.ed.gov had.
  • We strongly recommend students/parents complete
    the FAFSA on the Web.
  • Quicker.
  • Reduces errors.
  • Built in edit checks.

10
www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • From this website
  • Check for federal school codes.
  • Register for selective service.
  • Remember, males 18 to 25 must be registered with
selected service to receive federal student aid.
Males who are at least 17 years of age can begin
the process. Selective Service will act on the
registration request once student is within 30
    days of turning 18.
  • Check the status of the students FAFSA.
  • Find out about student aid (frequently asked
    questions).

11
PIN Personal Identification Number with the
U.S. Dept. of Education www.pin.ed.gov
  • Why is PIN important?
  • Can be used as the student's signature when
    completing the FAFSA on-line.
  • Will allow student to access other Dept. of
    Education databases in the future.
  • PINs are specific to an individual. A parent may
also obtain a PIN so s/he can also sign FAFSA
    electronically.
  • If student and/or parent does not "sign" the
FAFSA with a PIN, the signature page MUST be
printed from the www.fafsa.ed.gov Web site,
signed and mailed to the federal processor.

12
www.pin.ed.gov
  • PIN Personal Identification Number
  • Implemented PIN system in spring 2001.
  • Allows students and parents to easily apply for a
    PIN.
  • To apply for a PIN on-line, go to www.pin.ed.gov
  • PIN applicant's name, SSN, and DOB are matched
    with SSA.
  • PIN mailer (i.e. private postcard) with
applicants PIN is mailed to the applicant if the
    match is successful.
  • If the match is unsuccessful, applicant will
receive a letter instead of a PIN mailer.

13
www.pin.ed.gov
  • Apply for a PIN.
  • Generally will take 7 to 10 days to receive a PIN
    via U.S. Postal mail.
  • Request duplicate copy of PIN.
  • Ask to change PIN if feel PIN has been
    compromised.

14
www.collegeboard.com
  • Access the College Board's website to get to the
    Profile on line.
  • Register for SAT exams.

15
CSS's Profile On-Line
  • At www.collegeboard.com, select CSS/Profile.
  • Some higher cost private institutions use the
Profile to award institutional financial aid.
Many have deadline dates that are fast
    approaching.
  • Student first registers on-line for the
application indicating the colleges that have
requested the Profile. CSS then provides a
    "customized" Profile application.

16
www.nycolleges.org
  • Great resource for the 100 private colleges and
    universities in New York State
  • Map with institutions listed by region
  • Financial Aid section
  • Academic Programs 500 programs and where
    theyre offered by degree-level
  • Campus Profiles contact info, costs,

Web Wave Wrap Up
  • Overwhelming? Perhaps.
  • Way of the future.
  • Internet has helped process student aid faster
    and better.
  • It will continue to play a greater role in a
student's search and application for college.
