- Higher quality means making a better city
- Adding environmental and economic value.
- This means more attractive buildings, development
that appreciates existing buildings better
architecture, streets and pathways. - Putting Southampton on the map!
5Create a more sustainable Southampton that
addresses the impacts of climate change
- Ensuring that the city faces up to the challenge
of Climate Change - Forcing new development to reducing energy
demand, carbon emissions and include on site
renewables - Ensure resource efficiency is maximised
- Proactive and positive approach to Biomass and
Combined Heat Power
6Create new shops and offices in the city centre

- Plan for significant growth in the city centre,
creating a quality urban centre, a regional
destination - Mixed uses including residential, offices,
retail, leisure and sustainable transport - Open up the waterfront including potential
connections with the cruise industry
7Realise the potential of the suburban shopping
areas and create more attractive neighbourhoods
- Support and enhance the places to shop such as
Shirley, Lordshill, Portswood, Bitterne and
Woolston - Create more sustainable neighbourhoods
characterised by open spaces, access to schools,
health amenities, other facilities and community
establishments - Increase walking cycling improve public
health
8Build an additional 16,300 new homes with
appropriate infrastructure
- New homes are needed due to demographic change
and high house prices - Impact of key government and regional policies on
Southampton, we must build more homes in urban
areas - A sustainable mix is sought including family
housing
9Enhance open spaces, the natural environment and
biodiversity,
- Maintain the citys open spaces and enhance the
overall quality (including both recreation and
hard surface spaces) - Ensure the enhancements to the citys
biodiversity and green grid - Safeguard and maintain national and
internationally important sites including
important mudflats and habitats
10Ensure we have an effective transport network
- Support the Local Transport Plan 2 (2006-2011) by
including the geographical elements of
transport - Ensure that development is sustainable by being
concentrated around public transport - Help create a modal shift toward more sustainable
transport modes - Control car parking and ensure that residential
parking is appropriate to local context - Support the access needs of the Port of
Southampton
