2The workshop has 4 emergency stop buttons. They
are used in an emergency to switch Off all of the
machines in the workshop.
3The paddle is made from Acrylic
The material used for the funnel of this boat is
called Dowel
The wood used to make the hull of the boat is
called Pine
4Pine often has Knots. These Knots are where
branches grew on the tree
5The handle is made from Rosewood
A Try Square is used to draw a line at right
angle to an edge
6A Marking Gauge is used to draw lines parallel to
an edge
The marking gauge is made from Rosewood
7The Saw board helps hold timber in place and
protects the desk when sawing
The Saw board is made from beech
8A Tenon Saw is used to cut straight lines
9A Coping Saw was used to cut the slot in the
stern of the boat
The teeth on a coping saw blade should point
backwards. This will help prevent blade
breakages.
10Safety Rules
The Belt Disk Sander was used to sand the bow
of the boat. When using this (or any other
machine) it is important to read the safety
notice on the wall to make sure you understand
how to use the machine safely.
11- When using the sander you must
- Wear Goggles
- Tie any long hair back
- Tuck in any loose clothing
- Only use the machine one at a time
12The glue used to glue the boat together is called
PVA Adhesive This type of adhesive is most
suitable for gluing wood to wood and takes about
2 hours to cure
13When sanding it is best to sand back and forth in
the direction of the grain
14Panel pins were used to hold the rubber band in
place.
Panel pins are available in a wide range of sizes
from about 10mm to 50mm in length
15Each work station is equipped 4 files 1 Rough cut
Rectangular File 1 Smooth cut Rectangular file 1
Half Round File 1 Round File
One edge of the file has no teeth. This is
called the Safe Edge
16A File Card is used to clean the files
17An Engineers square was used to mark out the
propeller
18The Pillar Drill was used to drill 2 holes
through the boats paddle

21A Centre punch was used to mark the acrylic
paddle before it was drilled
22We used Polyurethane Varnish to varnish the boat
When you finish varnishing you should clean your
brush in White Spirits
23A Cordless drill was used to drill holes for the
mast etc
