1
Clinical and Translational Science Awards
(CTSA)
A Centerpiece of the National Institutes of
Healths Roadmap Initiatives
2
What Prompted the CTSA Initiative?
U.S. Healthcare Outcomes
  • Despite large expenditures for research and the
    provision of health care services
  • Only 55 of Americans receive evidence-based or
recommended processes in their health care.
  • The US health care system actually exposes
    patients to unnecessary harm.
  • There is a lack of coordination of care for
patients seen by multiple physicians and care
    providers.
  • Only 53 of adult patients report that their
physician typically informs them about treatment
    choices.

3
More Healthcare Outcomes
  • The US spends 15 of the GDP on health, whereas
the average among industrialized nations is
    8.5.
  • Still, 16 of the US population remains uninsured
and is at risk for receiving no or inadequate
    health care services.
  • Large expenditures do not translate into better
    health outcomes.
  • The US is at the lower end of the spectrum among
industrialized nations for a number of health
    care metrics.

4
Despite These Expenditures Congress and the
Public Want to Know Why We Arent Doing Better
5
A New Research Paradigm
  • NIH recognized that current approaches for
bringing new scientific discoveries to bear on
    the nations health are uncoordinated,
    inefficient, wasteful and sometimes
    counterproductive.
  • NIH developed the Roadmap Initiative to guide the
changes necessary to build an integrated system
that is more effective than current approaches.
  • NIH sees the Clinical and Translational Science
Awards (CTSA) as one key element in the
    accomplishment of its goals.

6
Understanding the Basics
Clinical and Translational Research
From Bench (Biomedical and Behavioral Science
Research)
To Bedside - Clinical Trials (Best Practices)
To Community (Improved Health)
7
UTHSCSA What is our Goal?
  • To create an academic home that will facilitate
the translation of biomedical research from bench
to bedside to the community and result in better
    health outcomes for South Texas

Institute for Integration of Medicine and
Science A Partnership to Improve Health
