Who initiated the idea?
- The Salem School Board began considering the
project need years ago. - Facilities Committee appointed by the School
Board took two years to develop and recommend the
proposal. - Frank Marinace, architect, was selected by the
School Board on the recommendation of the
Facilities Committee. Mr. Marinace has been
designing New Hampshire schools for 34 years.

Who is being served by the project?
- Current enrollment is 2258
- 1607 from Salem
- 651 from Windham
- Windham students will leave in 2009
- Salem High Enrollment in 2009/10 is projected to
be 1523 - Goal is to design a high school with enrollment
capacity of 1600 and core capacity of 2000

- What do we currently have?

- The original building opened in 1966 with 140,585
square feet. - A 78,356 square foot addition was built in 1970.
- A 50,000 square foot Vocational Center was built
in 1987. - Total square feet 268,941 s/f
- Total being renovated 218,941 s/f
- Key systems HVAC, plumbing, electrical are
all more than 40 years old.

- What do we propose, where, and why?
- Convert the existing library to office space to
- Remove the library as corridor issue
- Direct a secure main visitor entrance to
Geremonty Dr. - Provide better facilities to CTV 6, A.V. and CTV
17 23 - Build a new library in the current office space
with expansion into the courtyard to - Provide adequate library facilities
- Provide limited access for security of students
and materials.

- Create a new science wing in the area of the
current upper gym to - Provide science labs that meet standards
- Correct deficiencies with mechanical, electrical,
and plumbing systems in labs - Address structural problems with existing upper
gym floor - Convert the Davis Gym to performing arts space
to - Increase band space to state standards, provide
facility for band rehearsals, provide adequate
storage. - Move chorus out of a storage room and provide
adequate facility.

- Expand and renovate the Seifert Auditorium using
the vacated band space for needed storage, prep,
and costume changing to - Create a better performance venue for students
and the community - Help regulate access points
- Renovate each and every classroom and hallway to
- Remove dated finishes and address asbestos items
- Provide updated HVAC and new utilities
- Provide new and more efficient lighting
- Install communications and data systems

stand alone facility to - Replace the spaces taken for new science labs and

What is the consequence of not doing the project?
Prices will escalate 6 to 10 per year
- Major systems problems will be addressed in
piecemeal fashion - Electrical systems are outdated
- Mechanical systems are in disrepair
- The roof/ceiling tiles/floor tiles will need to
be replaced - Structural deficiencies must be corrected
- Data communication systems must be updated
- Security should be added
To be eligible for 30 state reimbursement funds,
project costs must be equal to 25 of the
replacement cost of the building or 5 million ,
whichever is less. Doing these repairs as stand
alone projects will cost you more!

When is this planned?
- Public Information Effort NOW
- March, 2008 Request funds for schematic designs
of renovations. Begin preparing construction
documents complete necessary detail to be able
to provide firm cost estimate for construction
bond (no surprises) - March, 2009 Request approval of construction
bond - July, 2009 Work begins
- August, 2011 Work completed
