3What is CINAHL?
- CINAHL is one of the key nursing databases.
Virtually all English-language nursing
publications are indexed. More than 1,750
journals are regularly indexed online abstracts
are available for more than 1,500 of these
titles. There are now more than 23,500 records
with full text included.
4Core DatabasesCINAHL
- Click on the hot link - Usually denoted when
your mouse cursor turns into a hand icon.
5Logging on
- There are now two methods of logging on
- On Campus (no ATHENS required)
- Off Campus (ATHENS required)

7OVID DatabasesChoice of therein
- To select just one database click on its name (in
blue). - To pick more than one database tick the boxes at
the side of the databases you wish to search, and
then click -
8Aim 1 to find records on Clinical Assessment
Tools for a person who has suffered a Stroke.
- How to proceed
- On the screen you will see a long white box.
This is the search box. Above the search box it
will state, Enter Keyword or phrase. Into this
search box type stroke. Then click on Search.
9Search 1.You will now be mapped to the subject
heading, Cerebral Vascular Accident. (This is the
preferred term that CINAHL uses, instead of the
word stroke). To the side of these three words
(in blue) you will see two tick boxes.
Place a tick in the box labelled Focus, then
click on the Continue button.
10Subheading DisplayYou are now at the display
which shows a number of choices.
Here it is possible to focus your search further
by ticking one or more - e.g. Prevention and
Control, but this can exclude some useful
information until you are more experienced it is
recommended that you do not tick these
subheadings. Instead just click Continue
11Search History PageYou are now back on the main
search page. In the search history box, you will
see that your first search on, Cerebral Vascular
Accident has elicited 7000 records.
12Search 2. In the search box, type your next
subject. Proceed exactly as you did when
performing the earlier search. Please remember
to place a tick in the Focus check box. (This
time you will elicit over 4000 records)

13Combining your searchesYou have now completed
two searches.
- In order to combine these searches,
- Click on the Combine Searches icon.
- Place a tick in both boxes.
- Then Click on the Continue button.
14Limiting your searchesThe search history will
reveal that your combined search has refined your
results down to 200 records. 200 records are
still rather a lot to look through.
- In order to narrow your search down further.
- Click on the More Limits button.
15Limiting your Searches The bullet hole instructs
the system to concentrate on limiting your
desired search.
- There are many limiters to choose from.
- Eg.
- Research
- English
- Publication Year
- And many more
16Limiting your SearchesWe are just going to use
two limiters
- In this case well use,
- Publication Year. 2001 - 2006
- Research.
- And then click on Limit A Search

- Here we can see what the limiters are and how
they have affected our results.
18Displaying Your Results
Click on the Display icon and you will see your
list of results.

keep.How to proceed
- Then, if you click on the Complete Reference
you will get a detailed view of your result.

- You will see that the first record becomes much
more detailed. Read through the record carefully,
paying particular attention to - Source
- Article Title
- Subject Headings
- Abstract (if given)
- Publication Type Language
21Selecting your Records.
- Once you have decided on a result you want to
keep. - Tick the Results box
- Then click on Next Result
22Collating your ResultsOnce you have finished
selecting your results.
- Click on the Results Manager

- You are now given a number of options within the
Results Manager. You will see that the Results
Manager is basically broken down into four
separate parts - Results
- Fields
- Results Format (including Search History)
- Actions

25Printing Articles from CINAHL
- Only a small proportion (8 approx) of Articles
cited, are available directly in Full-Text - Others can be checked Via the Find it JRUL

located.And its even filled in the details for
you.
- Year
- Volume
- Issue
- Page
- Just click GO

- On this occasion it has directed us straight to
the article. - Sometimes it will be up to YOU to browse the
journal, and find the article. - Please note there are lots of different journal
providers and each one is different from the
next.
28Returning to Search
- Once you have printed your article you can exit
that screen - and
- Return to your session

- If you want to create a personal account, click
on...

- To create your Personal Account.
- Click on Create a new Personal Account

- Choose a username e.g. your network username
- Choose a password (between 6-8 characters)
- Insert your email address.
- Then click Create

- To save a search history
- Click on Save Search/Alert

- You then need to
- Choose a Search name
- Make a comment if you wish
- Decide how long you want to keep It for
- Then click Save
34Ending your session
- When its all over and youve saved or printed
out your searches. - Just click Logoff
35TrainingStaff and students may also like to use
the Medical and Human Sciences Drop-In Search
Clinics, which run every Wednesday afternoon, 2-4
pm, in the Blue 1 Training Room, located in Room
Blue 1.5 in the Main Library. These clinics are
designed to help anyone having difficulties using
the Library's electronic literature searching
tools, such as Medline or Cinahl. No appointment
is necessary.
