29The Mathematical Art of M.C. Escher
title
Self Portrait
30 Maurits Cornelis Escher was born June 17th, 1898
in Holland and died in 1972. He was an important
Dutch graphic artist that used mathematics to
draw tessellations.
31Early life
- Maurits Cornelis Escher was born on June 17th,
1898, in Leeuwarden, Holland. - In 1903 Eschers family moved to Arnhem,
Holland. - Between the years 1912 and 1918, Escher attended
a secondary school in Arnhem.
32School Days
Although Escher was never good in school, his
artistic talent was evident early in his
schooling. Escher was encouraged to pursue his
interests in a regular career, architecture.
1918 through 1919 Escher attended Technical
College in Delft. In the years 1919-1922 he
attended the School for Architecture and
Decorative Arts in Haarlem.
33- On June 14th,1939, Mauritss father dies. A year
later on May 27th Eschers mother dies. - In April of 1962 Escher is admitted to hospital
for an emergency operation he takes a long time
to recover. - Two years after his operation Escher and Jetta
fly to Canada to undergo another operation in
Toronto.
34Achievements
M.C. Escher was a man studied and greatly
appreciated by respected mathematicians,
scientists and crystallographers, yet he had no
formal training in math or science. He was a
humble man who considered himself neither an
artist nor mathematician.
35Family
- Escher meets his future wife Jetta Umiker
in Ravello, and then they both go back to
Sienna. On June 12th, 1924 Escher and Jetta are
married. Escher's first son George A. Escher is
born on July 23, 1926. Eschers second son,
Arthur, was born on Dec. 8th, 1928.

38Eschers Impact
Eschers work has been appreciated by people of
all ages. Whether young or old, Escher found a
way to capture the beauty of life and math in one
of his paintings or tessellations.
39Conclusion
Not enough could be said about Eschers work the
depth, meaning, and importance. His legacy will
live on as we encourage you to explore what he
has drawn for us in the world of mathematics and
imagination.

41Emmy Noether
(1882-1935)
42Back In the Days
- Her father became known as a distinguished
mathematician and professor. - In 1907, she began school as one of two women
among 1000 male students.
Emmy Amalie Noether was born on March 23,1882 in
Erlangen, Germany.
43The Impact She Had On Math
- Once she finished getting her doctorate, she
began to teach at Gottingen in 1916. - -In 1919, she officially became a part of the
faculty as an academic lecturer. - While there, she developed a general axiomatic
method of making general theories of ideals and
noncommutative algebra's.
44"The Noether Boys"
These are some of Emmy Noethers colleagues
and students.
45Quotes
- She had a great stimulating power and many of
her suggestions took shape only in the works of
her pupils and co-workers. - Emmy Noether was the most significant creative
mathematical genius thus far produced since the
higher education of women began. - She originated, above all, a new and
epoch-making style of thinking in algebra.
