3I. IPv6 Activities in KT
1. Overview
- Brief history of IPv6 in KT
- We subscribed to the international IPv6 Forum
- We got public IPv6 address from the APNIC (first
time in Korea) - We deployed the first native IPv6 network in
Korea (non-commercial research network)
- We did IPv6 field experiment with BT
- We tested mobile IPv6 in the Lab.
4I. IPv6 Activities in KT
- We tested transition mechanisms
- We did performance tests with commercial routers
- We did large scale interoperability and
performance tests with commercial products - We have developed IPv6 Firewall
- We have developed high quality video conferencing
S/W based on IPv6

6I. IPv6 Activities in KT
2. IPv6 Test in the Lab.
- Goal
- Verify the interoperability and performance of
the commercial IPv6 products before we build
Premium/NGN backbone network
- Test Period
- 2003. 10. 6. 10. 18.
- System Under Test
- Cisco GSR12416(320G)
- Juniper M40(40G), T640(640G)
- Procket8812(960G)
7I. IPv6 Activities in KT
8I. IPv6 Activities in KT
- Test Items
- Routing protocols
- 6to4 Tunneling
- IPv6 over MPLS (6PE) LDP, RSVP-TE
- IPv6 over Martini Circuit
9I. IPv6 Activities in KT
- Test conclusions
- HW based routers can forward 100 IPv6 packets,
but CPU based routers show very poor forwarding
performance. - IPv6 over MPLS(6PE) has better performance than
6to4 tunneling. - All routers operate stably for BGP4
- Some routers need more stabilization for IS-IS
- Some routers need more stabilization for OSPFv3
10I. IPv6 Activities in KT
2. IPv6 Field Experiences
- KT deployed the first native IPv6 network in
Korea in 1999 - KOREN(KOrea advanced Research and Education
Network) - Major customers are universities and research
institutions - Non-commercial but production-level network since
it has been deployed (funded by MIC KT) - IPv4/IPv6 dual stack (including tunnel service)

18II. IPv6 Deployment Strategy
2. Deployment Strategy
- Phase 1 ( 2004)
- Build IPv6 testbed and field trial
- Develop IPv6 business model
- Phase 2 (2005 2006)
- Deploy dual stack from the access network
- Launch IPv6 commercial service for the advanced
users - Korea Information Infrastructure-Government
- Digital Home IPv6 trial service
- Mobile IPv6 for the Portable Internet (2.3G)
19II. IPv6 Deployment Strategy
2. Deployment Strategy
- Phase 3 (2007 2009)
- Diffuse dual stack to the backbone network
- Application transition from IPv4 to IPv6
- Phase 4 (2010 )
- Deploy IPv6 only equipments from the backbone
network - Evolve to the IPv6 only network/service
- Completion of all-IPv6 network
20III. Concluding Remarks
- Evolution to IPv6 is a synthetic art
- There is no strong driving force for transition
yet - More applications should be developed
- Network equipments should be more stabilized for
the successful commercial deployment
Thank You !
