2Like Many Americans, my great grandparents landed
at Ellis Island
- They came from Germany, Hungary, Gibraltar and
Spain. They sailed in Steamships and settled in
the New York and New Jersey area when they
arrived between the 1890s and the 1920s.
3My Mothers grandparents came first from Bavaria
in 1892
Louis Steinholtz
Katarina Rudat Steinholtz
4They had brothers and sisters who came to America
and they all started to have families
5My Grandma Kay was one of them
Ekatarina (Kathryn) Steinholtz
6Moms fathers parents came from Hungary about
the same time
7Great Grandma, Paula Miskovitz, was a furrier who
made a good living working for Bonwit Teller on
Fifth Avenue
8Great Grandpa, Josef Stankovsky was a tailor, who
opened a shop in a storefront at their home in
Queens, NY
9My Dads mother came from Gibraltar in 1919 with
her widowed father and four sisters on the SS
Argentina arriving on Halloween
10Almost exactly a year later, Dads father arrived
from Spain, via Cuba, aboard the SS Monterey on
10/30/20. He was alone and 17 years old. His
father had died in 1910 and his mother remained
in Spain with two of his sisters.
My Great Grandparents
Antonia Barros Prado
Jose Prado
11Grandpa Prado met Grandma at a dance at a Spanish
Social Club in 1928. They were married in
January 1929 and my father, John Prado was born
on New Years Day 1931.
12Dad had no brothers or sisters but had lots of
cousins living in two adjacent houses who were
almost as close as siblings.
13They spoke only Spanish until they were 5 and
drove their Kindergarten Teacher crazy when they
first started school. Their parents changed that
fast and started using English almost exclusively
at home (all their mothers came from Gibraltar
a British Colony and spoke with a British
accent).
14Dad was a good student and a good athlete. He
went on to be the first member of his family to
attend college after he finished his time in the
army.
15Moms parents met when each was on vacation with
friends up at Green Lake in the Catskill
Mountains in 1927.
16Grandma Kay said she was first attracted to
Grandpa Bill because he had a car (that was a
bigger deal then than it is now).
17They were married in June 1928. My mom was born
July 21, 1930. The thirties were tough for them
since my grandfather lost his banking job when
the depression started. Then my grandmother got
sick with Tuberculosis just after my Aunt
Caroline was born in 1933. She spent 2 years in a
hospital and my mom went to live with Grandma
Steinholtz while Gramps cared for Baby Caroline,
helped by his mom.
18Grandma got better and Grandpa started running
his fathers tailor shop. Mom was also a good
student. She and dad met at New High School in
Queens
19Mom was also the first in her family to go to
college. After graduation from Queens College,
mom became a teacher. She and Dad were married
December 5, 1955.
20Mom and dad both worked and attended graduate
school. Dad was featured on the cover of his
companys magazine
21And on February 3, 1959 my brother William was
born
22And 18 months later I came along on July 28, 1960
23Willy and I played lots of Baseball. Our heroes
were Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris of the
Yankees.
One of our greatest thrills was winning the World
Series two years in a row in Little League
24Another theme in our lives was fishing and
boating. From an early age I loved being on a
boat and I came to love fishing as I grew older
25Willy and I both went to Great Eastern University
and shared many of the same friends
26We also both went to work for the same finance
company after we graduated in the 1980s
27And made a lot of friends there
28Willy was first to marry
Willy and Lydia September 3, 1985
29And in June 1988 I met Julie . . .
30And we were married the next June
31 Alex was born on May 24, 1990
32He was a lot of fun!
33But Alex got lonely and wanted a baby brother . .
. .
34Reed was born on August 2, 1995
35Reed is a happy child
36 Lydia and Willy had their share of children too.
Pictured left to right are my Alex and Reed, then
Willys Robert and William
37Fishing is important in their lives too!
38Sometimes they catch a really big one!
39Baseball has been a huge part of their lives as
well
40It is hard to believe that Alex is old enough to
drive and that he worked two summers to buy his
own car
41My parents take great delight in their grandsons
42Its scary to think that in ten to fifteen short
years we will likely be adding to this family tree
