2UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PLAN
3Protection of our most valuable natural resource
rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and waterways-is
vital
4Management of Stormwater runoff is necessary to
protecting these resources.
5Any contaminants or pollutants which enter the
storm sewer system eventually effect our
waterways.
6In 2003, UA filed a Notice of Intent (NOI) with
the Alabama Department of Environmental
Management (ADEM). This amounted to an
application to discharge stormwater.
7On January 1, 2004, ADEM issued coverage to UA
under the State general NPDES permit.
8Only two entities in Tuscaloosa County (UA and
the City of Tuscaloosa) have applied for and
received the required stormwater discharge permit
9As a part of the UA discharge permit, EHS has
developed a stormwater management plan which is
composed of the following elements
10Public Education/Involvement
- EHS has developed and distributed brochures, fact
sheets and advertisements regarding stormwater
management.
11Public Education/Involvement
- EHS has held meetings to discuss stormwater
management on campus and encourage public
involvement.
12Public Education/Involvement
- EHS has encouraged individuals to report
violations by publicizing in ads reporting
options.
13Public Education/Involvement
- EHS has developed a campus based committee to
provide input and guidance to EHS regarding
stormwater management.
14Illicit Discharge Detection
- EHS is in the process of developing a campus
storm sewer map. The scheduled completion date
is late 2006.
15Illicit Discharge Detection
- The storm sewer map will be used to identify
improper connections to the storm sewer system.
16Illicit Discharge Detection
- Once identified improper connections will be
corrected.
17Pollution Prevention
- Each UA employee can assist in stormwater
management by reporting problems and identifying
areas of potential concern.
18Pollution Prevention
- Some common stormwater management issues and
pollution prevention techniques are
19Silt Control
- Install and maintain silt fences.
20Erosion
- Develop green areas to limit soil erosion.
21Parking Lot Runoff
- Debris, oil, trash and asphalt runoff end up in
the waterway.
22Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance
- Good maintenance helps to keep oil and other
fluids out of waterways.
23Turbidity
- Anything that colors or makes waters cloudy
should not be added to the storm sewer system.
24Pesticides/Fertilizers
- Use sparingly and only as directed.
25Chemicals
- Should never be put into the storm or sanitary
sewer system.
26Paint Washing
- Paint washings even those from water based latex
should never be put into the storm sewer system.
27Oil and Grease
- Collection tanks must not be allowed to overflow.
28Inlets
- Must be kept clear of debris
29Runoff
- Should be diverted to green areas whenever
possible.

regarding stormwater, contact EHS at 348-5905

in the space type 32 which is the slide number of
the test. Type 31, 32 in the space to print this
instruction sheet also. - Send the completed test (s) to Janie Fowler (box

completed test from each person that views the
presentation in order for the person to get
credit for this months safety training.
