Ford Island
5The island of Oahu is one of the chain of islands
we call Hawaii. At the time it was not a state
of the United States, but a territory. Wheeler
Army Base, Hickam Air Force Base and Pearl
Harbor, U.S. Naval Station, were located on this
island. They were all targets of the Japanese
attack. More than 100 planes were lost.
6- 90 minutes before the attack the U.S.S. Ward sunk
an unidentified submarine sneaking into Honolulu.
7Diamond Head
Soldiers on an overlook on Diamond Head did not
see the Japanese planes coming.
8Kolekole Pass
Bombers flew between these mountains to get to
their targets.
9Pearl Harbor Attacked!
The red and green lines show the paths of the
Japanese planes. There were two waves of attack.
They flew through narrow mountain passes to
reach their targets.
Had they come from the south, the United States
might have been prepared to defend their bases.
