Home Oxygen Services
  • Cylinders historically provided by community
    pharmacies under local contracts
  • Concentrators were supplied using a number of
    varied arrangements with specialist companies
  • Assessment and review of patients was ad hoc

Process
  • Patients and clinicians wanted a different
    service
  • Consultation with NHS on service specification
  • DH went out to tender for 10 oxygen regions
    through NHS Purchasing and Supplies Agency
    (PASA) 
  • 4 companies were offered contracts Air Products,
    BOC, Linde and Allied Respiratory/Medigas
  • A range of health professionals including acute
    care can now order oxygen for patients as well as
    GPs
  • Supply whole service cylinders, concentrators,
    ambulatory and liquid oxygen a service
    specification specifying response times etc  -
    supply within 4 hours of receipt of urgent
    orders, one day on discharge from hospital and
    within 3 working days of receipt of order for
    standard delivery

  • 1st February 2006 transition to new providers
