2 Nature-GIS a European thematic network for
Protected Areas/Nature Preservation and
Geographical Information
Thematic network IST Programme,
IST-2001-34641 Start April 2002 Duration 36 months

3The Context
The ProblemIn the EU there are many different
organisations and individuals involved in the
management of Protected Areas COMPLEXITY A
SolutionGeospatial technologies can provide an
integrated and common interface to the data and
information required to manage Protected
Areas HoweverTo make data and information more
widely accessible, it must be collected to
certain standards and be fully documented
(metadata)
4Statement of the Problem
- The availability of geospatial data and
information for Protected Areas in Europe is
still relatively limited and in general poorly
catalogued - Internet and communications technology can help
to facilitate wider availability and use of data
and information - Realising the potential of this technology is
often restricted by the gap between technical
experts, technology and end-user communities - There is lack of awareness, knowledge and
understanding about the availability of,
requirements for and uses of the geospatial
technologies, data and information
5Nature-GIS objectives
- To support the provision of harmonised
geo-information about Protected Areas - To support public access to data and information
in the EU and in the new accession countries - To raise awareness regarding the use of GI-GIS in
this field

7Expected outcome
- Technical guidelines for GI data for protected
areas - Definition and demonstration of a Web access to
GI data - European awareness for a supra-national approach
in GI management in protected areas - establishment of a pan-European group in the
field Thematic Network NATURE-GIS

14Nature-GIS Mission statement
-
- to assess user needs in relation to the policy
requirements and to raise awareness on use and
access to geo-information - to serve the community of people dealing with
environmental protection programmes and
management of protected areas in their daily
tasks - applications and information services Inspire
Complying to better stream the flow of
geo-information at local, regional, national and
supra-national level, also through the definition
and adoption of common data models - collaboration and synergies with other European
organisations that focus on the conservation of
protected areas at the regional, national and
European level.
Nature - GIS Conference - La Coruna, 24th June
2003
15Nature-GIS is a network bringing together the
different stakeholders in protected areas, both
users and experts in IT and in nature
conservation, to address the requirements for
geographic information in protected areas, with
special reference to European policies in this
field.
