24Commercial Support plays a vital role in CME
25Oversight
- To help protect the integrity of CME, the ACCME
adopted the Standards for Commercial Support of
Continuing Medical Education in 1992.
26SCS
27Commercial supporters may not control the
planning, content, or presentation of the CME
activity.
28Standards for Commercial Support
- These standards outline the required procedures
for commercial supporters, accredited providers,
activity presenters, and participants in a CME
activity.
29Presentations must give a balanced view of
therapeutic options.
If possible, only generic names should be used.
However, If trade names are used, those of
several companies should be used.
30Commercial exhibits may be a part of CME
activities but may not interfere with the
presentation of the activity.
Exhibits
Education
31No promotional materials may be displayed or
distributed in the same room as the educational
activity.
This includes pens, banners, notepads, samples,
etc.
32Funds for support of a CME activity must be given
in the form of an educational grant, outlined
in a Letter of Agreement that specifies the terms
and conditions.
33Funds may be used for any aspect of the activity
e.g. supplies, a-v services, food beverage,
and speaker honoraria expenses.
34Note that money MUST be paid to the Affiliate
or UVA CME Office and CANNOT be paid directly to
any speaker or supplier.
35Funds must not be used to pay travel, lodging,
registration fees, or personal expenses for
non-faculty attendees.
36All Commercial support must be acknowledged in
printed announcements and activity materials. The
acknowledgement may not mention any specific
product(s).
37On request, the CME provider must supply
commercial supporters with full accounting of the
expenditure of all funds provided for an activity.
38Disclosure, Its important!
39Why is disclosure so important?
Because, the audience has the right
to know what influences a speakers presentation.
40Each Activity Faculty member must disclose any
financial relationships with commercial
interests.
Hi, I get money from..
41The CME provider must have a mechanism to resolve
any conflicts of interest
42The participants must be informed prior to the
presentation that faculty either
- Have no financial relationship(s).
- Have a financial relationship (and then state the
nature of the relationship).
43The CME Offices role is to help our Affiliates
to develop high quality activities and to ensure
that all UVA, ACCME, and AMA policies are
followed.
44Remember, we are here to help you with your CME
activities.
45If you are unsure of how to do something, ask us
BEFORE you do it.
