I would like to thank Corporate Express for their
donation of office equipment, supplies and

Zilwaukee School volunteered many hours to move,
paint and install the furniture and equipment.
Chrystol Bandy, home -school aide and Christy
Spess, hearing-impaired aide volunteered many
extra hours to help paint. Custodian Jeff
Hernandez was happy to pitch in too. He pushed,

out Zilwaukee School office has had a make
over! It all began 3 weeks ago with a phone call
from Corporate Express. Corporate Express, a
community partner, who relocated to the Detroit
area, phoned our school and donated over 40,000
in nearly new office equipment, furniture, and
supplies to our school. All donated items are
now at Zilwaukee. We have plans to utilize these
items throughout the building. It is a work in
progress. To date, we have completed the planned
office project. It has been painted and furniture
and equipment have been installed. The work
space has been transformed. It is upbeat, with a
welcoming look and overall refreshing appeal.
Everyone, including parents, community, students,
and staff, have remarked how much they like
it. This has truly been a group project, one
completed with in-kind donations of materials,
labor and love.

Mrs. Stephens First Grade The twenty-four
Students in Ms. Stephens first grade have been
learning how to take AR tests with the help of
their sixth grade reading buddies. Each Thursday
morning they read with a sixth grader. After
reading the book, they talk about the book and
the sixth grader helps them take an AR test on
the book. This is a good way for the first and
sixth graders to practice their reading. Soon
all first graders will be taking AR tests by
themselves in the library. Thank you Sixth
Graders and Ms. Henton for helping us with this.

EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS During
Halloween week, Mrs. Paetzs 2nd grade class
enjoyed learning all about El Dia de los Muertos,
an important Mexican holiday. This two day
celebration begins on the eve of October 31st and
lasts until November 2nd. Families in Mexico use
this time to honor loved ones who have passed
away. Many special traditions take place during
this time. Mrs. Paetzs class talked about these
many traditions and even had the opportunity to
try some of the traditional food and beverages
Pan de los Muertos (Day of the Dead bread), lard
cookies and Mexican hot chocolate. Yum!! The
2nd graders cant wait to learn more about their
international address of Mexico!

Alert!
We have had some cases of chicken pox at school.
Here is some information that may be helpful.
Chicken pox is an infectious disease caused by
the varicella zoster virus. The period of time
from which a person is exposed to chicken pox
until they develop a rash is 14-16 days with a
range of ten to twenty one days. There may be 1-2
days of fever feeling tired before the rash
appears. The contagious period for chicken pox
begins 2 days before the rash and last until all
of the blisters are crusted and dry. If you
think your child has the chicken pox please keep
them home and seek medical advice.
The Saginaw News SEASONS READINGS 2006 Book
Campaign Mrs. Paetz' class 2nd grade will be
collecting new or like-new children's books to
help brighten the lives of other's during this
holiday season. Donated books will then be
distributed throughout mid-Michigan by The
Salvation Army, Boys Girls Club of Saginaw
County and READ Association of Saginaw County.
Please help us with this very worthwhile
community service project by sending any new or
like-new children's books to school with your
child. The 2nd graders will be coming around to
classrooms from Monday, November 20th through
Monday, November 27th to collect any and all
donated childrens books. These books can be any
kind of childrens picture book and/or chapter
book. The books can be brand new or gently used.
Please help us with this wonderful cause and
join us as we share the joy of reading with
others. Thank you!
7ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RIF!!!! THANK YOU,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
To all the parents, staff, and students for
making the 1st RIF distribution of the 2006-2007
school year a HUGE success! It couldn't have
happened without all the donations of time,
talent and treasure that you all put into it.
The students were able to select a BONUS book if
they wore their Saginaw Public Library summer
reading program T-shirt, and in all we had over
40 students that participated! Thank You also to
Janie Miller, the RIF coordinator for the Saginaw
Public School District for coming out to
celebrate our RIF event with us and taking some
AWESOME pictures! We will be looking forward to
yet another great RIF during the month of
February. Until then, keep reading! Thanks
