Emotional IntelligenceStrand
  • Meeting of Lead Learners to discuss the issues of
how implementing whole school approaches to EI
will impact on children and staff
  • Wednesday May 26th 2004

2
On Wednesday 26th May 2004 a large group of
Lead Learners from Dudley North Schools met at
Foxyards. They had attended the 6 day Emotional
Literacy Course and wanted to take stock of where
they were at and what they wanted to do next.
Sammy O Gorman (strand leader) and Chris Lester
led the very successful meeting which is
reflected in the following slides.
  • Sammy first of all discussed with the group what
they hoped to get out of the day
  • This resulted in-
  • What they were thinking.
  • Where they were.
  • What they wanted to happen in their schools.
  • What the next steps were

AND
What will Emotional Literacy / Intelligence do
for your school? This resulted in talk
about Meta-Learning (i.e. learning about
learning) and with a FOCUS ON PUPILS
3
These were the initial thought of what people
wanted to get out of the day
Where next Establishing links Catching up Ideas
to get staff on board
Confidence to feed back Examples
tried/tested Where to start Opportunity to visit
other schools How to put theory into
practise Chance to talk to others are we
feeling, thinking the same Chance to share/voice
opinions
Where do we go from here? What have people been
doing? whats worked - staff - concrete examples
Cascade ideas across schools through network
system How do we judge effectiveness og
EQ? Time-implementation - Evaluation
-development School development
4
Sammy then explained what she as Strand Leader
wanted for the group (which is reflected in this
chart)
To share
To lead influence others
SKILLS CONFIDENCE
To impart new knowledge Caths course Current
research Tool kit Audit
To work interdependently
NETWORKING
Its about META-LEARNING (learning about learning)
Talk with others Learn with others Share skills
etc
THE FOCUS IS ON PUPILS
5
Individuals were asked Choose one thing you
would like to make a difference to your school
For all teachers to understand all children
and their behaviour!
Less shouting at children
Dinner ladies
Change the cant dos into can dos
To influence how learning styles are catered for.
For everyone to consider the child first rather
than the work involved in change!
Attitudes
More recognition for the children who are ALWAYS
well behaved! Etc Equal balance between children
who are good/ones with problems
The way in which staff speak to children!
Every child can achieve
Every child has a positive self image
Lack of confidence belief in themselves pupils
and staff
Listen to each other
Treat children consistently
Whole school policy for rewarding behaviour (not
achievement)
Labelling of children by staff and other
children
How to deal with children who are in trouble or
who have broken a rule or misbehaved.
6
The group then worked in pairs to discuss what
they understood by EI/EL and posted it. Here
they are their thoughts
Developing E.I. improves Self awareness Motivatio
n Empathy Recognition of choices Accountability
Understanding our emotions and who we
are. Understand and value others. Te enable us to
interact effectively
Encouraging the child to understand themselves
and others and their role in life/education by
acknowledging who they are/where they come from
and where they want to go.
Learning together, helping each other,
understanding and valuing the inner state of
the whole school community.
Emotional Intelligence Knowing yourself and what
makes you tick. Being aware of the effect you
have on others and why they behave how they do.
And how to deal with it.
Helping the child realise that were there for
support, motivation to listen and to
offer a helping hand!
Knowing yourself and through this understanding
being able to empathise with others.
Being able to control our own emotions so that
they dont effect your ability to deal with
behaviour/emotions of others.
Recognising ones emotions and their effects.
7
The groups then worked in threes to model in a
grid what they had done so far in their
schools. They first worked by themselves Then
shared it with the other two in the trio and
agreed one example to feedback to the group See
resulting tables in appendix 1
Using the audit ideas from Peter Sharps book
they worked to produce an individual audit and
drew up an Initial Plan for Improvement. In new
Trios they then explained to their colleagues HOW
they were going to carry out their plan and what
strategies they would use. Staff have retained
own copies
8
As a whole group they discussed what the next
steps should be. These were- Organise and plan
two shared staff meetings with another school to
discuss approaches to EI Look at how a whole
school approach can be introduced Embed the ideas
into the school improvement plan Meet again as a
staff to sharing strategies for getting things
done and looking at ideas like using Emotional
Intelligence to manage resistance, getting your
own way, working with and leading teams, how to
influence the Head, introducing projects, and
selling ideas. Talk to their Heads about what
they had done and what their plans are.
Sammy and Chris gave out a toolbox of resources
which contained current reading and help
sheets. The knowledge gained from the meeting
would also be e-mailed the following day to be
added to the toolbox. Heads would also be
informed of the meeting.
9
  • They then carried out an evaluation of the
    course.
  • The criteria for success/key messages are
  • To network to learn together
  • Hard professional Learning
  • (to build the skill base in schools)
  • Focus on pupils how our learning will affect
    them
  • These are the findings-

What have you learned about Networking and
Learning Together? We are strong!! - part of a
team. We are meta learners Spoken to new
colleagues different to those Ive worked with
before. This has been very interesting. Other
secondary colleagues too. Gained even further
great ideas for our school. Got reassurance
(again!) That we can achieve more if we work
together and support each other It was really
useful to share ideas and opinions. I can really
see the benefits of visiting each other in school
and really becoming ONE. That there are a number
of schools working together on and believing in
putting children first. That I am not on my
own Meta-learning - and what that means Best way
to see the wood for the trees School is not
working in isolation Together we can make a
difference. It is going to be a positive
experience to work with other lead learners You
take in more from a colleague than a course
(?) Networking learn about how other people are
carrying out E.I in their school. We are all
facing the same problems. Very important to share
what weve been succeeding at. Good CPD because
it is followed through. Weve learned about the
importance of networking but we need more time to
share with the whole group so we can network with
like schools.
10
How has today helped to build your skill base for
future action? Sharing -Inspiring/motivating
Perspective - Ideas Given me confidence to
re-focus on where our school should be going .
Knowing that my ideas are positive/worthwhile. Sha
ring the ideas and the INSET already carried out
in other schools has given me more confidence to
be able to deliver E.I. in own school. The next
steps list has really inspired me I can see
what direction Im going in again! These top up
sessions really keep me going and help me
focus. Given me confidence - Inspired
me Challenged my thinking and doing Liked the
indicator of how EI you school is Very useful to
share with other staff and impact on the
SIP Having ideas brainstormed and shared has
helped to guide me is knowing the best way to
lead our school Beginning to get ideas on sharing
ideas with staff. Talked about things that had
worked in other schools/classrooms. Toolbox will
be useful.- Reminded of the course New word
Meta learning Meting colleagues after a while
and talking about the course. Lots of ideas,
empowered me for staff meetings Audit really
useful, for a way forward for my school Good to
reflect on what has been done already in school
and helped focus on areas for future
development Lots of ideas Started to develop and
Action Plan need to discuss own perceptions
with relevant individuals/groups. Structured
approach to planning future development We now
have the lunch box to help deliver teacher
training
11
What and how from today will help keep pupils
central to the work? Pupils at the centre -
Valuing and caring Remembering what I want to
achieve in regard to E.I. List of things that I
wanted to change in school was great e.g. less
shouting, attitudes etc. Remembering that better
E.I. will help to improve achievement. Continuing
to develop the E.I. in the classroom and
integrating it into the curriculum. Sharing our
experiences with our classes and others. Just
keeping in mind that the whole Network is for the
children Having a support network - Discussing
what has worked in school Knowing that there are
schools who are willing to work together with
the same beliefs Further evidence of the value of
EI work. - Confidence Having other peoples
experience of testing ideas out. Children need to
be values and self esteem needs to be
built/maintained Need constant reminders of what
we are really about. Need to keep focusing and
coming back to the fact that children are
central. Most of the examples were about
children Knowing what E.L. means and keeping
focussed on this. Knowing that other people are
trying similar things Forefront of everything
that doing / need to share with children. All
strategies and all work discussed have children
central Higher priority given to School Council
as a vehicle for pupils news/opinions Revitalised
thinking on working with pupils as well as staff
on EQ Reviewed work from course through talking
to colleagues ideas from them. They are always
central but encouraged by evidence of activities
that are working and making a difference. That is
why we are in the job.
12
What more support will you need as a Lead
Learner? Time for INSET plus training of staff
including support staff Resistance training -
Involving parents and governors - Continued
meetings please they really help Time now to
speak to colleagues from my school Please can we
do Michael Fullen training How to deal with
resistance in the staffroom/INSET What an E.I.
school/classroom looks like How to integrate in
SIP -Dealing with resistance training would be
great What does an E.I. classroom look like How
to get everyone on boarddinner ladies/parents
etc. Managing conflict and resistance How to
involve whole school community -Dealing with
resistance in school Managing changing the dinner
ladies attitudes How to get parents on board
lost way to inform them about it Confidence
building in leading E.I. - Resistance
training Planning agendas together - More
time/opportunity to talk to others How to involve
entire community Listen to more experiences
particularly with regard to leading other staff
members - Dealing with resistance Time to read
up/research - Continue sharing good practice Time
to read/plan INSETS speaking to govs Ideas for
common INSET programmes. Additions to toolbox
More knowledgeable as leaders Support of
headteacher / keep them informed - Link to other
schools Reading material develop own expertise
/ knowledge which can be cascaded Sharing ideas
opportunities to liaise with other
schools Reminders to heads about E.Q in schools /
the North Dudley Partnership Work and need for
training / development to continue in
schools Feedback from other schools Feedback from
other schools to support changes you are making
in your own school Time to view others practice
- Time to develop a strategy to move school
forward on E.I.
13
SUMMARY
The Group - Shared knowledge Shared
strategies Shared understanding IT WAS
ABOUT Knowing what each other were doing, what
they believed in, what they wanted and how they
were going to do it.
The next meeting will empower the lead learners
to implement and embed their ideas through
reading, sharing and constructing strategies
  • This will need to be followed by
  • What is it that we will want to impact on
  • children / learning?
  • How will we ensure that we impact on children?
  • How will we know?
  • and
  • How do we share that knowledge with others?
