• In 1928, C.V. Raman, discovered that the
  wavelength of a small fraction of the radiation
  scattered by certain molecules differ from that
  of the incident beam.
• The shifts in the wavelengths depend upon a the
  chemical structure of the molecules responsible
  for scattering

Raman Spectra

• Raman Spectra are obtained by irradiating(exposing
  to radiation) a sample with a powerful laser
  source of visible or infrared monochromatic
  radiation

During irradiation, the spectrum of the scattered
radiation is measured with a spectrometer .

• spectroscopy is the measurement of the wavelength
  and intensity of scattered light from molecules
  generated by a laser source.
• The Raman scattered light occurs at wavelengths
  that are shifted from the incident light by the
  energies of molecular vibrations.
