Transportation Revolution

• Changes are needed to encourage trade
• Roads and canals are helping
• Robert Fultons Clermont allows for carrying
  heavy loads upstream
• Locomotives come into use
• Better than boats because they can be used
  wherever track can be laid

Market Revolution

• Because of ease in travel, regions could
  concentrate on goods for profit
• West has wheat, corn, and hogs
• South has cotton
• Northeast has manufacturing
• Inventions such as Eli Whitneys cotton gin made
  cotton production more profitable and this
  extended the slave system

Industrial Revolution

• Began in Great Britain in mid-1700s
• Allowed for mass production
• Samuel Slater brought revolution to U.S.
• Eli Whitneys interchangeable parts led to better
  production
• Francis Cabot Lowell develops factory system

Urbanization

• Caused by industrialization and market revolution
• Cities such as Philadelphia, New York, New
  Orleans, and Baltimore grow
• Western cities also emerge Buffalo, Pittsburgh,
  Cincinnati, and Chicago

Panic of 1819

• Due to large growth, banks are loaning money for
  land speculators and manufacturers without stable
  security
• Second Bank of the United States attempts to
  bring state banks under control by calling in
  loans
• Also called for payment in specie
• Banks could not handle and this led to depression
