  • Obstetrician A doctor who specializes in
    pregnancy and birth.
  • Infertility- The inability to have children.
  • Miscarriage- a pregnancy that ends early in
    development due to natural causes.

  • Amniocentesis- Process of withdrawing fluid that
    surrounds an unborn baby with a special needle
    for testing.
  • Ultra Sound- Technique of using sound waves to
    make a video image of an unborn child.

  • Cell division- the process by which a fertilized
    egg begins to grow.
  • Fetus- The name for an unborn baby from the 8th
    week until birth.
  • Placenta- Tissue which connects an unborn baby to
    the mothers uterus

  • Umbilical cord- Long tube that provides
    nourishment and oxygen to an unborn baby.
  • Amniotic fluid- Protective fluid that surrounds
    and protects a fetus.
  • Fetal Position- curled up position of the fetus.

  • Contractions- the periodic tightening or

    cramping of abdominal muscles during labor.
  • Episiotomy- Surgical procedure, which enlarges
    the external opening of the vagina.
  • Dilate- Process of widening or expanding the
    cervix.
  • Epidural- Large needle injected, into the
    mothers back, to stop feeling during delivery.

  • C-SECTION When the baby is removed directly
    from the uterus.
  • Vaginal Birth When a baby is delivered naturally
    through the cervix and vagina.

  • Premature- a baby born before their development
    is complete
  • Birth Defects- Abnormalities present, at birth,
    which affects the structure or function of the
    body.
  • Down Syndrome- Physical and mental defect
    resulting from an extra chromosome.

  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- Defects caused by the
    mothers excessive consumption of alcohol during
    pregnancy
  • Siamese- Two babies developed from one egg, which
    did not split completely. Therefore, the babies
    are joined at some part of their body.

    fertilized egg, which spits apart soon after
    fertilization.
  • Fraternal- 2 babies that result from 2 eggs each
    fertilized by a different sperm.
