King George Island
3
King George Island
4
King George Island
  • several nations operate permanent bases
  • important hub to Antarctic Peninsula
  • focal point of scientific activities
  • shipborne / airborne tourism
  • protected areas
  • complex context but apparent need for
    co-ordinated management(SCAR recommendations
    Tokyo 2000)

5
Goal of the KGIS project
  • To produce an integrated geographic database
  • for use by all countries
  • for use in multi-disciplinary applications
  • planning and coordination of activities
  • environmental impact assessments
  • scientific database
  • management plans (SSSIs, ASMA)

6
Workflow
7
Data Input
  • Data was provided by- FH Karlsruhe, Germany-
IAA Buenos Aires, Argentina- IAAG Muenchen,
    Germany- IGIK Warszawa, Poland- INACH/IGM
Santiago, Chile- IPG Freiburg, Germany- KORDI
Seoul, South Korea- LaPAG/UFRGS Porto Alegre,
    Brazil- SGM/IAU Montevideo, Uruguay- ...

8
Data Integration
  • Scale0 (original scale of data) if necessary-
data is digitized- data is imported to GIS
package (ESRI ArcINFO / ArcGIS)- data is
    georeferenced- data is preprocessed (errors,
    remapping of attributes, ...)
  • Scale10 (major ice free areas)- where necessary
data sets are adjusted to fit the adjacent
more accurate one (e.g. on Fildes
    Peninsula)
  • Scale100 (entire island)- topographic data is
used to construct a DEM (using ArcINFOs
    topogrid module)- overlapping datasets are
clipped with a buffer- new contourlines are
    derived from the DEM

9
Data Integration
  • three different data sets
  • clipping
  • adjusting

10
Data Integration
  • three different data sets
  • natural variations or errors?
  • lakes union operator
  • watercoursesindividual decisions based
    onexpert knowledge

11
Mapping to SCAR FTC (preleminary)
  • A strict database scheme implementing the FTC
    has yet to be developed

?
12
Metadata
  • sparse incomplete
  • based on ISO 19115 FGDC
  • constructed using the ArcGIS-Editors
  • provided as XML file
  • an ISO 19115 compliant community profile might
    be very helpful

13
Applications
  • ablation modelling
  • monitoring glacier dynamics
  • website of film expedition
  • ice sheet modelling
  • mapping of sample sites

14
Data access
  • shapefiles
  • E00-files
  • taylormade products on users request
