History
  • Northern Peninsula Waste Management Committee
    formed in 2001 as a result of an engineered waste
    management study that was undertaken on the tip
    of the Northern Peninsula in 2000.
  • Study identified waste issues in the region and
    suggested a waste management committee be formed
    to handle the regions concerns.

  • Coordinator was hired in December of 2002 through
    funding provided by the Muti-Materials
    Stewardship Board.
  • On July 25, 2005, then Hon. Jack Byrne, Minister
    of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, gave the
    committee authority status under the Regional
    Service Board Act. The Authority was given the
    responsibility of developing and operating solid
    waste sites within specified areas of the
    Northern Peninsula.

Mandate
  • To work towards consolidating existing
    landfill/incinerator sites into modern waste
    management landfill sites.
  • To reach at least 50 waste diversion.
  • Reduce the number of waste disposal sites on the
    Northern Peninsula.

  • Undertake a community awareness campaign on the
    importance of consolidation of disposal sites,
    waste diversion and the benefits of programs such
    as composting.
  • Implement a cost effective waste management
    system that will ensure environmental
    sustainability for present and future generations.

Geographic Regions
  • There are four sub-regions in Northern
    Newfoundland.
  • Sub-region 1 includes 19 communities from
    Goose Cove to Boat Harbour .
  • Sub-region 2 includes 7 communities from Main
    Brook Englee Operations began on November 14,
    2005, in Subregion 1 2.
  • Sub-region 3 includes 28 communities from Eddies
    Cove East to Castor River South Operations
    will begin on September 29, 2008.
  • Sub-region 4 includes 5 communities from Eddies
    Cove West to River of Ponds Consultations will
    take place for this Subregion in the near future.

    waste picked up weekly by NWMA at a cost of 1.50
    per bag or deliver it to the site themselves at a
    cost of

Waste Audit
  • Average of 1.22 kg of residential waste per
    person per day is being generated.
  • Business waste generated was 10351 cubic metres.
  • Cardboard waste 274 metric tonnes.
  • Bottle/container recycling - 88 participation.

  • Composting - 23 participation.
  • NewCo Metals collected 21 metric tonnes of metals
    from the two landfill sites.
  • Food waste and wood fiber products make up 42 of
    the residential waste.
  • Accepted 124 dump truck loads of special waste.
