2Importance of Fire Safety
- Worcesters Cold Storage Facility Fire
- December 3rd, 1999
- Killed five fire fighters
3Importance of Fire Safety on College Campuses
- Seton Hall dormitory fire
- January 19, 2000
- Faulty fire alarms
- Killed 3 students and injured 58 others
4Importance of Environmental Safety on College
Campuses
- University of New Hampshire
-
- Violations of hazardous waste management laws
- 49,000 in fines
- 180,000 in mandatory improvements
5Campus Safety Key Facts
- Annually
- 1,700 documented University or College fires
- Colleges and Universities are forced to pay 1.3
million in health management violation fines
6Current WPI Safety Management
- WPI Plant Services
- The Residential Services Staff conducts a
scheduled Health and Fire Safety Inspection each
academic term - All fire equipment in all buildings are inspected
by hand by outside inspectors - Satellite Accumulation Areas are inspected weekly
by Dave Messier -
7Hazardous Waste Management Plan
- Satellite Accumulation Areas must be inspected
weekly - Each container must be marked with the following
- The words Hazardous Waste
- The chemical names, in words (e.g., acetone,
toluene) - The components and their percentages
- The hazard associated with the chemical mixture
- Disposal of hazardous waste at WPI
- Satellite Accumulation Area to the Main
Accumulation Facility - and
- Main Accumulation Facility and the off-site
Treatment, Storage and Disposal facility
8Fire Safety Equipment
- Fire Extinguishers
- Exit Signs Safety Lights
- Extinguishing Agents
- Dry Chemical
- Halon
- Water
- Carbon Dioxide
- Capacity (21/2 lb, 5 lb, 10 lb, 20 lb)
9Areas to Address
- Limited use of technology
- Paper-based record system
- No universal database of fire equipment and SAAs
- Timely and costly inspections
10Our Project Plan
- To develop an information system which will
improve environmental and fire safety on the WPI
Campus
11Project Objectives
- 1.) To collect environmental and fire safety data
along with related inspection information - 2.) To develop a computer-based information
system to monitor and preserve the information
gathered. - 3.) To develop a 3-D system of viewing and
monitoring the data - 4.) To provide an analysis of inspections here at
WPI - 5.) To provide WPIs plant services with a
useful tool for future health and fire
inspections
