4General Information
B.G. Teubner (biw K.G. Saur) and Brepols have
come together to bring out an electronic edition
of the Bibliotheca Teubneriana Latina whose
technical and academic supervision is the
responsibility of Cetedoc at the Université
Catholique de Louvain at Louvain-la-Neuve. The
first, original CD-ROM of the Bibliotheca
scriptorum Romanorum Teubneriana provides the
user with the complete texts (other than the
prefaces or critical apparatus) from the standard
editions (editiones maiores) of about 500 works
spread over eight centuries (c. 300 B.C.E. to c.
500 A.D./C.E.).
5General Information
BTL aims to develop considerably the
understanding of classical Latin literature. With
this in mind, each text in the database is
supplied with a bibliographical reference (or
memento) which provides details of the authors
dates, a reference to the printed edition, the
number of word-forms in the text, and the number
published after 1997 of different word-forms.
Such core statistics, beside specific uses,
immediately show the scale of the text, or
correlate such and such a frequency in the
context of the overall figures. .
6General Information
The first release of BTL will comprise the whole
of classical Latin literature almost in its
entirety (the gaps correspond essentially to some
fragments) for the period up to the second
century C.E./A.D., together with important
non-Christian authors from the second century
through to the Carolingian Renaissance (e.g.
Ammianus Marcellinus, Macrobius or Martianus
Capella). Future releases will be enriched by
those texts which exist only in a fragmentary
status, the works of grammarians and commentators
(particularly on Virgil), and the Anthologia
Latina. Eventually the database will also contain
medieval or early-modern authors published in the
Bibliotheca Teubneriana. release, 2000), which
will be essential for understanding the history
of the West and the fore-life of Christianity.

When the cursor is placed in the formae field,
you can formulate any simple or complex question
with the Boolean operators (, , for
and, not or) and brackets

21Determine level of proximity
- Determine a level of proximity
- x /2 y means that you are asking for the terms
x and y and x with a maximum of 2 forms between
them - x2y means that you are asking for the terms x
and y in the given order with a maximum of 2
forms between them - REMARK these codes of proximity (/,)
cannot be directly next to a parenthesis - Dont write (filosophia, philiosophia) /3
orator - But write (filosophia /3 orator),
(philiosophia /3 orator)

23Formarum examen
The Formarum examen enables one to check,
before starting the search, the presence of all
interrogated forms in the general index covering
both CDs. If the unsuccessful search of a form
is due merely to a mistake on the users part,
this is made absolutely clear. REMARK the use
of truncated words (e.g. cetedo) disables this
formae check
24Formarum examen
25Contextus 3 sententiarum
The Contextus 3 sententiarum allows one, if
activated, to make a query on a set of three
sententiae (sentences 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5,) or
one sentence, if it is not activated
