Title: BARCELONA
1BARCELONA
-
- What to see, where to go, what to do
2- Well, you could go to the zoo or the aquarium.
Put picture from zoo here.
3- Of course, you can go to a zoo or an aquarium
in the U.S. But in the U.S. you cant see
buildings like this . . .
4- This building is called La Pedrera, which
means the stone quarry. As you can see, it
looks like waves of stone. It was commissioned
by a family to be their home, but what Gaudí, the
architect they hired, designed wasnt exactly
what they had in mind. Now there are a few
apartments, but its mostly offices.
5?This is the roof of La Pedrera. Dont the
sculptures look like soldiers from a sci-fi
movie?
Here some of our students ? are looking at the
way Gaudí determined angles and measurements.
6- The Sagrada Familia is probably the best known
building in Spain. Like La Pedrera, it was
designed by Antoni Gaudí in the early 1900s, and
its still under construction.
7- This is one of the sculptures on one of the
façades of Sagrada Familia. This is Judas
kissing Christ in order to betray Him.
8- You may have figured out by now that Gaudí
designed a lot of buildings in Barcelona. His
style of architecture is called Modernism.
Heres another building, called Casa Batllò, he
designed. Like La Pedrera, it was supposed to be
a private home. There are two apartments there
now, and the rest of the building is open to
tourists. - Look carefully at the design. The tiles on
the roof were designed to look like dragon
scales, the columns on the second floor to look
like bones (of the dragons victims), and the
balconies to look like skulls.

My sister and I on the roof
?This is the ceiling in one room. Notice the
swirls. The entire building has a water theme.
The idea for patterns like this came from the
inside of a seashell. This window is
? deliberately rippled to give
the illusion that youre looking
through water.
10Gaudí wasnt the only Modernist architect.
Another one named Muntaner designed the two
buildings below.
- This is the Palau de la Música Catalana. The
building is as much an attraction as the concerts
that are held here.
This is the Hospital Sant Pau. You can take a
tour of it, but its also a working hospital.
11Barcelona has its share of museums, of course.
These are sculptures from the Chocolate Museum.
La Pedrera
Horse-drawn chariot
Don Quixote jousting at windmills.
This is a chocolate painting of the artist
Salvador Dalí.
12Theres a Dalí museum not far from Barcelona.
Dalí was an unusual artist. For one thing, he
was a master of illusion. Do you see the face in
the painting?
13Now check this out. What do you see?
Abraham Lincoln or a nude woman?
14What about now?
15But Barcelona isnt all about buildings and
museums. Personally, I really like the parks.
16Güell Park is full of mosaics in unusual styles.
Here are some shots of the park and one of the
mosaics found there.
The next picture is taken at the entrance of the
park and is one of the best known symbols of
Barcelona.
17 18- This is called Parc de la Ciutadella. Lots of
people go there to picnic or relax or sunbathe.
These are some of our students rowing on the
pond. -
?This is an enormous fountain that serves
as the centerpiece of the park.
19After the students had rowed on the pond . . .
. . . there was enough money left to treat all of
them to ice cream.
20- This is El Parc del LaberintMaze Park.
The park is a beautiful wooded area with streams
and bridges and fountains and peacocks. The
student who gets through the maze the fastest
wins a prize.
21Heres the ? winner . . .
. . . and the runners up.
22Here you see one of the peacocks, which make the
most awful noise youve ever heard, and some of
our students posing with a park inhabitant.
23- You might want to attend an evening event
thats typically Spanish. You can go to a movie
any time in the U.S.and even watch a movie in
Spanish. While youre in Barcelona, how about a
. . .
24. . . flamenco show?
25- Every Sunday evening theres a bullfight.
Its nice to go so that you can experience
firsthand what youve always read about, but if
youre a real animal lover, maybe youd better
try something else . . .
26- . . . like the fountains at Montjuic. Every
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in the
summer, these fountains dance to the
accompaniment of lights and music.

28- What I like to do most in Barcelona is wander
around the city. You never know what you might
see, especially if you go to the Ramblas, which
is the main avenue in Barcelona. People go there
to see and be seen.
29- This is one of the many, many street
performers to be found on the Ramblas. You can
see statues of Charlie Chaplin or Elvis,
flamenco dancers, and clowns, just to name a few.
30- These are pictures taken on the Ramblas.
31- This large market, called La Boquería, is on
the Ramblas. You can buy fresh fruit very cheaply
here.
32And this, of course, is the beach, which the
students avoid like the plague.
33- The main reason I like wandering around the
city is that you never know what youll learn
about the culture as youre roaming through the
city.
34Here you see several groups of people doing the
national dance of Catalonia (the region where
Barcelona is located), called the Sardana.
35-
- My sister and I stumbled across a celebration
a few years ago when we were just wandering
around, and now we go every year. Several
different social clubs organize parades in this
neighborhood near the beach to honor fishermen.
36These are called castellers. Building these
human castles is a well-known tradition in
Barcelona.
37- Of course, part of the culture is the type of
car they choose to drive. Gas costs about twice
as much in Europe as it does here.
38- Of course, we dont want to forget that
classes are a part of the program.
39- And as you can see, class is very boring.
40- Heres almost all of our 2005 group in
Ciutadella Park on the left and about two thirds
of the group in Labyrinth Park on the right.
