• Bavaria is the largest and oldest state in
  Germany
• Because it is the southernmost state, it has
  always been home to many trading routes to the
  Mediterranean and Southeast Europe
• Known as the Free State
• Top farming province of Germany
• Home to 12.5 million people
• Medium-size businesses are the core of Bavarian
  economy
• Car companies such as BMW and Audi are based in
  Bavaria

• Martin Behaim constructed the first globe
• Rudolf Diesel invented the Diesel engine in
  Augsburg
• At least twelve of the Nobel Prize winners after
  1945 have studied in Bavaria
• Max von Pettenkofer was the first to institute
  hygiene
• Wilhelm von Roentgen won the Nobel prize in 1901
  for his work on x-rays

• Bavarian Alps
• Average almost 2000 m high.
• The Zugspitze, Germanys highest mountain peak,
  reaches 2962 m.
• Alps Fore mountains
• Filled with small lakes, wetlands, pine forests
  and fields that are ideal for farming, recreation
  and leisure.
• East Bavarian Low Mountains
• Mountain forests, lakes and peaks such as Arber,
  which reaches 1456 m high, dominate the landscape
• Contains the Bavarian Forest National Park
• Swabian-Franconian Scarpland
• Hilly country cut by steep valleys and bizarre
  rocks

Famous Castles

• Neuschwanstein
• built between 1869 and 1886 but only a third of
  the building was actually completed
• The woodcarving in King Ludwig's bedroom took 14
  carpenters 4 1/2 years to complete and Wagner's
  operas are featured everywhere in the form of
  murals
• Hohenschwangau
• Was used as the main residence of the government
  of Schwangau
• King Maximilian II used it as a summer home
• Linderhof
• Built between 1870 and 1879 and modeled after
  Petit Trianon in Versailles, France
• Full of mirrors, painted ceilings and gilded
  cherubs, in a mixture of Renaissance and baroque
  styles
• Herrenchiemsee
• King Ludwigs II largest castle
• Wanted to create a replica of Versailles but only
  had enough money for the central portion
