2
Why bother?
  • Displace your imported electricity
  • Currently 12 p/kWh
  • Earn on ROCs (and other benefits)
  • Currently 4.5 p/kWh
  • Earn on generated kWh units
  • Currently 8.5 p/kWh
  • Total 13 to 16.5 p/kWh income

3
Whats in it for the electricity companies?
  • Electricity suppliers obliged to supply 10 of
    electricity from renewables (2010)
  • Must demonstrate by holding Renewables Obligation
    Certificates (ROCs)...
  • ... or pay a buy-out price.
  • Other benefits
  • Levy Exemption Certificates (LECs)

4
Schemes for microgenerators
  • Under 6kW installed capacity
  • Need to be a customer
  • Electricity supplier will pay for
  • all generated electricity
  • You will pay for
  • any imported electricity
  • NOT based on net imports/exports

5
Schemes for microgenerators
  • Typical tariff
  • 15 p/kWh for all generated electricity
  • Includes ROCs, LECs and other benefits
  • 14 p/kWh for imported electricity
  • 15 p/day standing charge
  • Metering
  • No export meter required
  • Ofgem accredited generation meter required

6
Schemes for small generators
  • Typically up to 50kW installed capacity
  • No need to be a customer
  • Electricity supplier will pay for
  • Net export of electricity
  • ROCs and other benefits
  • You will pay for
  • Net imports of electricity

7
Schemes for small generators
  • Typical tariff
  • 9 p/kWh for all generated electricity (equivalent
to 45 per ROC double ROCs for small
    generators)
  • 8.5 p/kWh for net exports
  • 14 p/kWh for net imports (usual tariffs)
  • 15 p/day standing charge
  • Metering
  • Need an export meter (100)

8
Commercial generation
  • Over 50kW
  • Power Purchasing Agreements
  • ½-hour metering
  • Supplier will pay
  • 45 per ROC
  • Unit price depends on time of day, etc.

9
On-line Auctions
  • Non-fossil Purchasing Agency
  • ROC auctions every 3 months
  • Renewable electricity auctions every 6 months
  • Requires registration and an estimate of your
    generation capabilities
  • NFPA facilitate a Power Purchase Agreement with
    the successful bidder
  • You get paid retrospectively for what you
generate and supply into the grid

Non-fossil Purchasing Agency
Average e-ROC prices
Average e-power prices
11
Non-fossil Purchasing Agency
  • Benefits
  • e-ROC typically 50/MWh
  • e-Power currently 9 p/kWh
  • Costs
  • 1/MWh fee, minimum 200
  • (lower limit 100 kW)
  • Metering
  • Grid access charges (minimal)
