Title: Opening Remarks

1
Opening Remarks
  • Colonel Commandant
  • BGen (Retd) Ernest B. Beno, OMM, CD

2
State of the Artillery
  • Operational Commitments
  • Op tempo
  • Training Commitments
  • Personnel Issues
  • Regular Force-Reserve Relationships
  • Equipment - leading edge technology
  • New roles/functions
  • Doctrine and Tactics

The Army is at War, and the Artillery is at the
Forefront
3
Regimental Robustness and Cohesion
  • Support our Gunners and Units
  • To maintain op tempo
  • To build on the past, and prepare for the future
  • Build Cohesion
  • Esprit de Corps
  • Build depth and resilience

4
Force Generation and Force Sustainment
  • Valid argument to justify efforts in supporting
    and sustaining the Royal Regiment.
  • Operational imperative that we build the agility,
    robustness and resilience.
  • "Heritage" is a legitimate combat multiplier -
and ever so gradually being recognized as such.
  • "Heritage" is the glue that keeps the fighting
    units together.

5
The RCA Heritage Legacy
  • Intuitively all regiments preserved trophies,
    silver, photos/paintings, unit museums, etc.
  • Freedom of City Parades, etc for pride,
    recruiting, fighting spirit.
  • Creation of the Home Station and RCA Museum in
Shilo, and registry of things regimental
  • Management era much of this lost. Matters
heritage faded and so did cohesion, esprit de
    corps, teamwork and fighting spirit.

6
Artillery Heritage Program
To bring the story of the Royal Canadian
Artillery to all Canadians
7
The Heritage Program
  • Much work has been done, by a few people, with
    considerable progress
  • The strategy is sound, but has not been fully
    embraced by the regiment
  • The strategic management of heritage could be
    more effective
  • A fund raising organization of volunteers has
been established Doug will brief on momentum
  • Communications needs work
  • Administrative support has been inadequate.

8
An Integral Part of all things Regimental
  • Bottom line - Artillery Heritage must be an
integral part of all things Regimental
  • all units,
  • all ranks,
  • serving and retired, and
  • friends of the Regiment
  • It must have legs, and must be sustainable - not
just a fund raising campaign, and a burst of
    energy
  • It must be, and must be seen/felt as being
    meaningful.
