• Preserving and Digitizing Sound Archives in
  Central Asia
• sponsored by UNESCO and conducted by AIBDA
  series of one-week workshops conducted in the
  Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan between
  October 2004 and May 2005

Background

• The Central Asian states have a rich musical and
  aural history.
• The state broadcasting organizations have a long
  tradition in recording and preserving historical
  and cultural sound documents.
• With the braking-up of the Soviet Union old
  organizational structure were lost and the new
  Independent States struggle to organize and
  reorganize the broadcasting sector. In this
  process the needs of the archive have often been
  overseen or neglected.
• The introduction of new digital recording and
  production technologies have often left the
  archives behind, rendering them relict of old
  analogue days with no new collection and no
  accessibility.

Workshop Aims

• sensitise decision makers about the urgency of
  the situation and mobilize them to take action
• inform about the state of the art of digital and
  computerized sound archive systems
• support the radio stations in the transition from
  analogue to digital archiving
• suggest possible solutions which suit the
  stations situation
