The Project
Helping the tourism industry work for
local people - not just the other way around.

How has backpacking grown since the first
Intrepids hit the overland trail to Australia in
the 60s? Is independent travel really more
sustainable than mass tourism? Does the old adage
'Take only photographs, leave only footprints'
still apply when my Tuk-Tuk driver is on
Facebook? More than footprints? is a series of
journeys ONTO the beaten track to ask local
people what were doing wrong and find out how we
can make a more positive contribution to those
places we visit. And we need your help

Its all about NUMBERS
  • Backpacking has grown far beyond its hippy
    trail origins
  • Over 550,000 backpackers visit Australia every
    year
  • A Round-the-World traveller spends, on
    average, US12,000 on their trip
  • 70 of UK students say they intend to take a
    gap year

If were all following the same guidebooks and
spending our money in the same places, how
sustainable is our COLLECTIVE IMPACT as
independent travellers? Last year backpackers
poured US440 million into the Australian economy
alone and there are hundreds of thousands of
backpackers around the world ready to spend money
in search of adventure. What kind of economic,
environmental and social impact does that kind of
demand have on the places we visit? The Day12
Project is heading onto the backpacker trail to
find out. Buy a Kilometre for a Quid! More than
Footprints? is a project everyone can be part of.
Were asking people to help us by donating 1 or
more to buy kilometres to support research into
the issues, promote sustainable backpacking and
give local people the chance to voice their
concerns about tourism. These people own
kilometres...
  • Our goals
  • to raise awareness of the cultural, economic and
    environmental issues surrounding backpacking and
    independent travel
  • to encourage debate among both seasoned
travellers and students in schools, colleges and
universities who are planning their gap years
  • to find out how tourism can work for local
people, not just the other way round.

the issues
More than footprints? is a series of journeys
through the most popular backpacker destinations
to get a local perspective on how we can limit
the impact of our journeys. Well be using local
and international media both en route and
following this research to raise awareness of the
issues and promote sustainable solutions.
but before just turning the page in the

Since launching our project we
have received fantastic support from around the
world and individuals and businesses in England,
France, Scotland, Sicily, Australia, Japan,
Israel, Brazil, Korea, UAE, Taiwan, Germany,
Colombia and Angola own kilometres! Visit
www.day12.com for more information on how to buy
kilometres Money donated to the project goes
towards raising awareness of the issues, the
journey research, the creation of the magazine,
poster campaigns in UK universities and the
distribution of teaching materials. Donations
are also welcomed in the form of equipment and
time donated by volunteers to help us promote
sustainable travel.

Support the project by buying kilometres to help
research into LOCAL answers to what we as
tourists are doing wrong and find out how we can
make a positive contribution to those places we
visit. We have three types of sponsor. Which type
are you?
  • Individuals
  • As backpackers we have a profound but often
unseen impact on those places we visit. Whether
youre thinking about taking a trip or have
already been there, done that and got the
    t-shirt, buy a kilometre ,10, 50 or 100 and help
us find out from LOCAL people how we are
    affecting those places we visit.

Local businesses Small businesses in tourism
destinations dont have the economic power of
large tourism providers but More than footprints?
is a low-cost opportunity for local businesses to
promote your hostel, internet cafe or bungy site
to tens of thousands of travellers in UK
universities.
Large sponsors We are looking for a small number
of large sponsors who understand the urgency of
the issues and wish to support our aims by
providing funding and assistance to The Day12
Project. Day12.com is an excellent opportunity
for marketing, recruitment of future talent or to
promote your green/sustainability initiatives and
CSR policies to this large and rapidly growing
market.
