    for 20 years
  • Helped create Television Northern Canada APTN
  • Telling Aboriginal stories and sharing with the
    rest of the world is my lifes work.
  • Through my work I want to inspire, uplift, help
    my community.

Venturing Forth series
  • 1999 Brenco Media produced an hour-long pilot
    program that examined the need for Aboriginal
    economic development and profiled 6 Aboriginal
    Businesses across the country
  • In the first two seasons of Venturing forth, we
    produced over 80 business profiles and 39
    half-hour programs. These stories examine the
    many degrees of Aboriginal Economic Development
    in Canada
  • From new Territories and First Nations to
    multi-million dollar corporations to sole
    proprietors
  • The stories honestly examine both the challenges
    and successes encountered along the way while
    serving to provide inspiration to all viewers.
    Segments included profiles of women, youth,
    Metis, leaders, NWT, Yukon, Nunavut, Atlantic
    Canada, Forestry partnerships.

Venturing Forth series 3
  • The 3rd Season of Venturing Forth took more of a
    documentary approach in order to examine more
    closely the relationship between Aboriginal
    economic development , self determination,
    cultures and individuals. Currently re-running
    on APTN (Sunday evenings)
  • Each program included personal stories and
    perspectives related in Aboriginal languages and
    sub-titled in English

Venturing Forth series 4
  • The 4th season of Venturing Forth will continue
    with the documentary genre and will the stories
    from the perspective of Canadas fastest growing
    population Aboriginal Youth
  • Brenco Media will reveal a new generation of
    young people who have been born into a way of
    life that is changing completely as resources
    dwindle, languages struggle to survive and our
    cultures evolve
  • This generation is seeking and creating
    opportunities that dont currently exist and many
    are struggling to maintain an Aboriginal identity
    in the outside world
  • They are young leaders, politicians and language
    speakers. They are young artists, entrepreneurs
    and educators. More importantly, they are all
    building promising futures together
  • This upcoming season will start airing this
    October on APTN.

Aboriginal Stats 2001 Census
  • Fastest growing population in the country. 6
    times faster.
  • Represents 4.4 of the Canadian population
  • 1/3 of the Aboriginal population under 14 and
    under (5.6 of all children in Canada)
  • Almost one-half of the population living in urban
    centres
  • Many opportunities and challenges will come with
    growing demographics.

Opportunity - share knowledge
  • Young vibrant population
  • Aboriginal communities have made great strides in
    business, in the courts, settling land claims and
    education
  • Language/culture very important to aboriginal
    people. Increase in areas where there is
    economic success
  • Society of story tellers explain the world in
    terms of stories through oral traditions, songs
    and dances (visual learners)
  • The use of technology and media will enhance how
    we decide we want to be reflected in todays
    society
  • Educate Canadian population about the
    demographics and opportunities in Aboriginal
    community.

Challenges
  • Important to continue to tell Aboriginal Stories
    to reflect and improve Aboriginal life in Canada
  • Telling stories of success will encourage young
    population and expose them to opportunities.
    Give hope!
  • Aboriginal Communities need to communicate their
    own messages better (with own community, region,
    governments and Canadian public)
  • Living conditions of Aboriginal people must
    improve (water, education, housing, health and
    access to opportunities)
  • Mainstream media must start reflecting changing
    demographics and telling stories of success in
    Aboriginal communities
  • Young people are demanding change and
    accountability at every level in leadership
    across the country.
