Kelp and Other Seaweed
2
What Kind of Resource?
Seaweed is by definition a renewable resource.
But, because of it's slow growth and increasing
opacity of water from human activities, this
resource could be potentially limited.

Where is it Found?
Kelp forests grow in cold, nutrient-rich water.
They are found throughout the world in shallow
open coastal waters. A dependence upon light
for photosynthesis restricts them to clear
shallow water.

Ecological Impact
Ocean sunfish, gray whale, sea otter, dolphin,
sea lions, urchins, sting rays, starfish, sea
anemone and more call kelp forests their habitat.
Birds, such as gulls, terns, cormorants, and
shorebirds use the kelp for foraging, resting,
seeking prey, and to secure themselves to escape
strong currents.

Our Thoughts on Kelp
We think kelp is a valuable resource for the
future, because is can be used for fuel, food,
and many other human uses. But, it is still
important to think about the ecological damage
over harvesting could cause.
10
"The numbers of living creatures of all Orders
whose existence intimately depends on kelp is
wonderful I can only compare these great aquatic
forests with the terrestrial ones in the
intertropical regions.
"Yet if in any country a forest was destroyed, I
do not believe nearly so many species of
animals would perish as would here from the
destruction of kelp.
-Charles Darwin (1860) The Voyage of the Beagle
