Appendix IPress for Palm Dog

UK Press for Palm DOg
  • The Evening Standard (London) May 29, 2003 by
    Neil Norman
  • CANNES postscript 2 contrary to reports,
Dogville did not leave without a prize. The film
scooped the Palm Dog for the discreet performance
by canine actor Moses, who heralds the arrival in
town of Nicole Kidman's character. At the
    Croisette ceremony, Dogville producer Vibeke
Windelov picked up the black-leather dog collar
trophy which was placed around her neck with
    appropriate reverence.
  • The Times (London) May 27 2003 Cannes of Worms by
    James Christopher
  • As ever, the usual sprinkling of insanity
lightened the blues. As a judge for the Palm Dog
award for best canine performance in Cannes, I
feel duty bound to report that this year's award
went to Moses in Dogville. Admittedly he is more
chalk sketch than bulldog, but, as Kidman argued
in her press conference, he was substantial
enough for her to want to pat him. "Once you make
the leap of faith, you are emotionally
committed," she said. Another priceless insight
into the mind of a great actor.

UK Press for Palm DOg cont.
  • The Guardian, Thursday May 20, 2004 by Charlotte
    Higgins
  • The race is hotting up for the Palm Dog award,
run by British journalist Toby Rose to pay homage
to the best acting pooch. One contender is the
English bulldog in The Ladykillers, which has to
do some impressive rolling over and fainting
before being given the kiss of life.
  • Director Joel Coen looked bemused when the
    creature's potential honour was mentioned
yesterday. To some, the animals that populate
Emir Kusturica's Life is a Miracle are by far the
most charming thing about the movie.
  • The dog, a playful mutt, is also tipped for the
Palm, but to my mind the evil-looking cat in the
same film, who kicks footballs, terrorises
canines and hypnotises birds to death, is by far
the most talented four-legged critter. Surely
    time for an honorary award?

23
International Press for Palm DOg
  • The Australian, March 14 2003
  • The Man Without a Past has won a slew of awards
including the Grand Prix at Cannes last year,
best actress at Cannes for Kati Outinen and the
(unofficial) Cannes Palm Dog Award for best
canine performance by Kaurismaki's dog, Tahti. "I
like dogs more than people," says Kaurismaki.
"They are more honest. At least they can't
    express their lies.
  • Canberra Times (Australia), May 29 2003
  • Among the many consolations at Cannes, we were
particularly charmed by the advance advertising
for a possible sixth episode in the Air Bud
series, one set in Australia and tentatively
called Air Bud Aussie Rules. At last a golden
retriever might be eligible for the canine acting
prize won this year by the eponymous dog whose
barking opens and closes Dogville, the prize
being actually called the Palm Dog.
