30Once in the NBD
- Resource Discovery
- Searching via Z39.50
- Portals
- KineticaWeb
- Recent Australian Publications (http//www.nla.gov
.au/kinetica/rap.html) - Direct access via URL to publication on Agency
Website
31- Resource Sharing
- Downloaded, copied to other library catalogues
- Electronic Collection Sets
32Issues, Lessons Learned
- Definition of publication (in scope for NBD)
- Quality of metadata
- New processes and technologies changing
environment - Workflows
- Transformation of data
33Issues, Lessons Learned
- Achieving greater efficiencies
- Moving from pilot to production
- Infrastructure
- Scalability
- Workflows
34Managing for Ongoing Access
- Relationship between NBD and Pandora to ensure
ongoing access to online Australian Government
Publications - Records from NBD are reused to provide metadata
for Pandora - Records for publications in Pandora are provided
by Kinetica as an electronic collection set for
libraries
35PANDORA, Australias Web Archive
- Collecting online government publications for 8
years - Titles included on the basis of selection
guidelines - Cwealth government publications comprise one of
six priorities categories - Archive now containes 5,500 titles
- Approx. 40 are government titles (incl State
government publications)
36Permission to archive
- Lack of legal deposit provisions for online
publications means NLA must negotiate with
publishers to archive - Licence with IP Branch of DCITA 97 domains
belonging to 51 agencies have granted blanket
permission
37Access to the Archive
- Catalogue record in NLA catalogue and Kinetica
- Browse title list on PANDORA home page
- Browse subject list on PANDORA home page
- PANDORA search engine
- Commercial search engines, Google, Yahoo, etc.
38It will be quite small, about 6cm by 4cm.
39Catalogue record
- Very important for discovery of and access to
online government publications in PANDORA - Assists government agencies with their obligation
to disseminate government information - Aim of pilot project is to create catalogue
records from metadata already produced by
agencies - Feed this data into the PANDORA digital archiving
system
40PANDORA and Cwealth Metadata Project
- Much larger volumes of government publications
will be collected - Agencies (not NLA) will effectively select what
goes into the Archive through provision of
metadata
41Databases
- Some government information published in
databases and other dynamic formats - PANDORA harvester cannot harvest
- 2003 commenced research project with
International Internet Preservation Consortium to
develop tools to indentify, ingest, store and
provide access - A number of Cwealth agencies have granted us
permission to archive their sites
