BRIEFINGS ON 2005/6 ANNUAL REPORT
  • ALBANY COAST WATER
  • Mr D Nicoll

2
Overview
  • For the year ending June 2006 we provided 513038
megalitres of good quality potable water to the
Ndlambe Municipality for distribution to the
    approximately 18000 residents and additional
10,000 holiday makers in December, in the area
    comprising Bushmans River Mouth, Riversbend
,Marcelle, Harmony Park, Kenton on Sea and
    Ekuphumleni.
  • 65 of this water is pumped out the sand dunes at
Diaz Cross, 9km away and the balance is provided
by Reverse Osmosis of sea water at Bushmans
River Mouth. The two sources mix in our holding
reservoirs with no chemical additives necessary.

3
Challenges
  • We are in a geological dry zone and do not have
    access to underground water
  • There is no possibility of dams as our rivers are
    tidal for approximately 30km inland
  • As the surrounding farms are converting to Game
Farms the indigenous population is moving into
our towns at a rapidly growing rate
  • The population has more than quadrupled since our
last reservoir was built in 1989 and instead of
having 10to12 days water in reserve for
emergencies we are down to 2 or 3 days
  • The massive influx of seasonal visitors
  • More people are retiring to the coast
  • The aging of our infrastructure
  • The majority of the population cannot afford to
    pay for the services
  • The perception that water comes from the sky and
is therefore free, leads to excess wastage from
    leaks etc

4
Challenges cont.
  • To overcome some of these challenges we are
presently working with private developers, such
as Kenton Eco Estates who are busy with a R400m
development and are contributing over R9m to
upgrade and increase our water production
capacity, to not only provide them with water,
but to have excess capacity for the growing
indigenous population. Ndlambe have also obtained
MIG funding for an additional storage reservoir.

5
Balance Sheet
  • From our Balance sheet one can see that we run
within our limits and keep expenses under control
but for any large scale project, such as the new
    reservoir, we obviously need Government
    assistance.
