Title: Steps For The Recovering Pharisee

1
  • Steps For The Recovering Pharisee
  • Steps For The Recovering Pharisee

2
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Introduction
  • Who were the Pharisees?
  • A sect that tried to keep the old Law
  • They were really only keeping their law
  • Upon making their law, the Pharisees found
meticulous ways of enforcing that law.
  • This harvested arrogance, judging and false
    humility before God and others
  • The Pharisee felt like he was in the light and
everyone else was in the dark

3
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Introduction
  • What is the problem with the Pharisees?
  • Jesus said they were blind guides to others
    (Matt. 2324)
  • The Pharisees and those who followed them would
never make it into the kingdom (Matt. 520)
  • THEY JUDGED OTHERS! Lets not be like the
Pharisees. Examine yourself and stop judging
    others.

4
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Recognize You Judge Others
  • No day goes by without judging others
  • Think about all of the things that we do to judge
    others everyday (illustration)
  • Isnt it interesting how we always have an
outlook, but rarely take a look within?
  • Our minds say, Why be questioned when I can be
the judgewhy should I put myself on the stand
when I can be scrutinizing someone else? It
    makes us feel good.

5
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Understand Why We Judge Others
  • We like to feel better than others
  • We find others who are sinful and then glory in
how much better we are than them
  • Why do you think it is that we pay tribute to how
righteous we are when all we really are is a
sinner saved by the grace of God?
  • Are we more like the Pharisee or like the humbled
    sinner? (Luke 1811-12)

6
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Understand Why We Judge Others
  • We like to have control over others
  • Those who think that they are the holders of the
keys of heaven are sadly mistaken (Matt. 235,
    13)
  • With that attitude, we not only exclude others
from the kingdom, but we exclude ourselves.
  • We need to make sure that we are not guilty of
creating laws while forgetting the will of God
    (Matt. 2323 Mark 79)

7
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Learn Not To Judge Others
  • We need to have Gods will for others
  • Six times Jesus showed the error of Pharisaic
ways when He overrode their understanding of the
Law for His own interpretation (You have heard
    it said, but)
  • Do not murder do not be angry Do not commit
    adultery do not lust etc.
  • Not even a Pharisee could stand righteous under
    this law (Rom. 39-12)

8
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Learn Not To Judge Others
  • We need to see our faults, not others
  • The Law was given that sin might increase while
grace was given so that we would turn from sin
    (Rom. 520)
  • Once I judge someone, I acknowledge the standard
by which I must be judged also (Matt. 71)
  • If we want to be judges, then we must be ready
    for Gods judgment

9
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Learn Not To Judge Others
  • We all must be faithful to Gods will
  • Faithfulness is not perfection! We often fall
like others and need to seek God
  • It is the call to perfection that urges us to
    continue in doing Gods will
  • The Pharisee is one with good intentions, but can
never humble himself to truly see his error so as
    to repent (Luke 1813)

10
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • IMAGINE for a moment
  • You are viewing the scene of Luke 18
  • The Pharisee is arrayed in his long robe,
phylacteries, and an ornate turban, but he is on
his knees next to the tax collector. They are
both in tears of repentance as they plead for
Gods mercy and grace. Because they are both
seeking God, they are able to embrace and are
joyful that God will be merciful to them. This is
a true picture of the kingdom (What a
    proposition)

11
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Learn Not To Judge Others
  • This will help us to stop judging others
  • Can we honestly judge someone that we see as
    equally sinful as ourselves.
  • Can we fairly judge another person, when we
ourselves are deserving of death, but God gave us
    all an opportunity for grace
  • Realistically, if we want love, mercy and
acceptance, we need to give those things to
    others. (Luke 636-38)

12
Step 1 Stop Judging Others
  • Application Yourself, not others
  • Be sure to stop judging others
  • Take an inward look at this time to be sure that
you are not falling into the trap of being
    judgmental toward others.
  • Never forget that you are a sinner too.
  • We need to remember that God is the judge of all
mankind through His Son. We need to obey the law
of the Lord, even the weightier matters.
