Fort Rouge
  • Was built in 1738
  • At the junction of the rivers
  • Established by M. de Louviere
  • Abandoned by 1749

Fort Gibraltar
  • Built in 1810
  • By the Northwest Company
  • Used as a provisioning post
  • Northwest Company used post to obtain pemmican
    from 1810-1811
  • Destroyed as result of fight between the Hudsons
    Bay Company and the Northwest Company

Fort Douglas
  • Built by the Selkirk Settlers
  • Built in 1813
  • Was controlled by Hudsons Bay Company
  • Northwest Company destroyed it by 1815
  • Hudsons Bay Company used the remains of Fort
    Gibraltar to rebuild Fort Douglas

The Red River Settlement
  • By 1930 it consisted of Cree, Saulteaux, Metis,
    Scottish Selkirk Settlers, English and Native
    people.
  • Political power was shared by the Hudsons Bay
    Company, the Church and a small group of wealthy
    land owners.
  • Over 3,000 people lived there (1834)
  • 90 of them were Natives

Before and After
  • Over the years, the Forks has been a trade center
    and home to many groups of people.
  • It was used a lot by the Hudsons Bay Company,
    and the Northwest company.

A Historic Tour
  • A childrens tour was created so that children
    could learn about their heritage.
  • Micheline Marchildon played the trickster guide.
  • The tour was based on him switching period
    costumes to fool Dr. Dig (played by Wayne
    Nicholas and Christian Perron)
  • Louis Laverendrye, A Metis and a Scot at a
    trading post and a European immigrant and customs
    official were portrayed
