The Thames Valley Professional development
Network has been established to facilitate
innovative teacher training for tutors working
with learners who have Skills for Life (SFL)
needs.

7Project - Professionalising the Skills for Life
Workforce
- Our primary focus is professionalising the
Learning and Skills /Skills for Life workforce in
the Thames Valley. Good practice demands that SFL
tutors should hold a level four qualification in
the subject specialism that they are teaching. - It also suggests that many vocational learners
have SFL needs and that their tutors need to be
able to support those needs by embedding SFL
within their teaching. - Mentoring, Developing Champions and sharing best

8Professionalising the SfL Workforce Our propriety
groups include
- Experienced Teachers - wanting to achieve
qualified status (QTLS) within the new
qualifications framework - Existing SfL Teachers - in service before 2002
who need to achieve new subject qualifications
expected of all SfL teachers. - New Teachers Those wanting to join the SfL
teaching arena - Teacher Trainees - currently on PGCE or
Certificate of Education courses able to benefit
from completing a specialist training in teaching
or supporting SfL - Vocational Tutors - responsible for embedding SfL
within their teaching and supporting the delivery
of key skills.
9Project - Enabling disadvantaged learners and
promoting progression and achievement
Develop high quality learning opportunities for
learners who face multiple disadvantage and who
have not previously been engaged in education or
training in recent years.
