  • Today 7 out of 100 (7)
  • Increase of almost 2000
  • 90 females / 10 males
  • Currently 7 million women 1 million men
  • 10-15 mortality rate
  • Highest death rate of ANY psych disorder

CAUSES
  • Theres always more than one
  • Perfectionism
  • Low self esteem (fear rejection failure)
  • High levels of stress
  • Depression
  • Rigid family w/ high expectations
  • Genetics

ANOREXIA NERVOSA
  • Definition self-imposed starvation
  • CRITERIA
  • Refusal to maintain certain body weight
  • (at 85 or below average weight)
  • Fear of gaining weight/ being overweight
  • Distorted body image
  • Females skipped 3 consecutive periods

OTHER INFORMATION
  • Anorexia is most common in those who are
  • Athletes (gymnastics, wrestling)
  • High achievers (good grades, involved) with low
    self esteem
  • Believe how they look is more important than who
    they are
  • Usually in denial

WARNING SIGNS/ SYMPTOMS
  • Refusal to eat, except tiny portions
  • Continuous dieting
  • Compulsive exercise
  • Excessive body/facial hair
  • Sensitive to cold
  • Hair loss
  • Absence of menstruation

MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS
  • Shrunken organs
  • Kidney disease/ failure
  • Fluid electrolyte imbalance
  • Deterioration of muscles
  • Irregular heartbeat cardiac arrest
  • Lose bone density osteoporosis

BULIMIA
  • CRITERIA
  • Binges secretive consumption of large amount of
    food in short amount of time
  • Purges vomiting, fasting, using laxatives or
    diuretics, excessive exercise
  • 2 times a week for 3 months
  • Self-esteem based on weight

OTHER INFORMATION
  • Unlike anorexia, people with bulimia can be ANY
    weight
  • Binges dominated by lack of control
  • Purges relieve stress outlet for negative
    feelings (fear, frustration, anger, guilt)
  • Being secretive interferes with interpersonal
    relationships and leads to isolation

  • Swollen cheeks/ glands
  • Sore throat
  • Teeth marks on knuckles
  • Increase in cavities
  • Bleeding gums

  • Dehydration
  • Vitamin mineral deficiencies
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Tooth decay
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chronic kidney problems/failure
  • Eruption of esophagus

  • Therapy resolve underlying issues
  • Earlier seek treatment better chance of success
