Background
  • Refer to syllabus
  • Anticipated Grading
  • Exam 1 25Exam 2
    25 Homework 25Papers /
    Projects 25
  • It is anticipated that there will be a number of
specific homework assignments. Most of these
will likely come from the end of the chapters we
    study, but perhaps not all.
  • ? Additional small / short papers and projects
will be periodically assigned, but these are not
major efforts. For example, I may ask you to
research some information on a specific topic and
submit a two or three paper summary of the
    information you found.

3
Project One
  • We have said a great deal especially near the
end of Chapter 12 regarding parity, bit parity,
block parity, etc. especially in regard to RAID
    architectures.
  • This assignment has to do with this topic and
related topics dealing a lot with hardware
    architecture.

Paper Details
  • I would like you to develop a paper of no fewer
than three pages double spaced is fine to
accommodate the following information. (You may
take as much space as you wish, but no fewer than
three pages in a Word document)
  • 1. Please discuss parity from a primary memory
point of view. Address things like information
bits versus parity bits as they pertain to
    primary memory.
  • This discussion must include error detection
codes and error correction codes. Specifically
what bits in, say, an 8-bit byte are information
bits and which are check or parity bits. So what
is the real size of a byte in primary memory. Be
sure to address error detection and error
    correction codes in some detail.

Paper Details - 2
  • 2. What, briefly, is bit parity, block parity,
etc. as pertains to RAID architectures?
  • 3. Discuss Cyclic Redundancy Checking (CRC
checking) Indicate your understanding of how a
CRC is computed and what they are used for.
  • 4. Related topics you might have discovered that
    you found helpful.
  • 5. Provide your sources (I use Google a great
    deal..) ?

6
Conclusion
  • If this is unclear, please let me know and I will
    clarify.
  • Thanks, and have fun.
