5Leafy Facts
Simple Leaves
In a simple leaf, the midrib runs through the
center of the leaf. The petiole is at the base of
the blade. The buds are located at the base of
the leaf stem.
6Compound Leaves
In a compound leaf, the blades are divided into a
number of smaller leaves called leaflets. The
leaves are located along the midrib. The buds are
located at the base of the entire leaf, not each
leaflet.
7Veins of Leaves
Leaves can be classified as either needlelike
or broad leaf.
8Webbed leaves can be either pinnate or palmate.
The veins in a pinnate leaf branch out from the
midrib like barbs of a feather.
The veins in a palmate leaf fan out from the
petiole and form a network of smaller veins
throughout the leaf.
