LIVERPOOL
  • Why is Liverpool called Liverpool?
  • The History of Liverpool can be traced back to
1190 when the place was known as 'Liuerpul',
possibly meaning a pool or creek with muddy
water. Other origins of the name have been
suggested, including 'elverpool', a reference to
the large number of eels in the Mersey, but the
definitive origin is open to debate and is
    probably lost to history.
  • Which county is Liverpool in?
  • Previously a part of administrative Lancashire,
created in 1888, and more recently as a county
borough in itself, Liverpool became in 1974 a
metropolitan district within the newly created
metropolitan county of Merseyside, but still
remains part of the ancient County Palatine of
Lancashire for cultural and historic purposes.

Liverpools 800th birthday
  • Who founded Liverpool?
  • 2007 is Liverpool's 800th birthday, marking 800
years since King John signed the city's charter
in August 1207. Liverpool has come a long way
since then, evolving from a tiny fishing port -
the Dee was the predominant river of the time -
to second city of the Empire.
  • King John's interest in Liverpool was as a
departure point for Ireland. He built Liverpool
Castle - on what is now Castle Street - although
    it wasn't completed until 1237, twenty-one years
after his death. Overlooking the Mersey, the
castle stood for more than 400 years it was
partly destroyed in the Civil War, before the
area was levelled and St George's Church built
and re-built on the site. The Victoria Monument
was erected there in 1902, and the area sustained
blanket bombing during the Blitz in 1941.
Somehow, the Victoria Monument survived, albeit
surrounded by rubble - today the area is Derby
Square, home to Liverpool's Queen Elizabeth Law
    Courts.

Liverpool Locals
  • Where did the people in Liverpool come from?

During the 1840s, Irish migrants began arriving
by the thousands due to the Great Famine of
1845-1849. By 1851, approximately 25 of the city
was Irish-born. At any point in history when a
new town is created there will be considerable
interest from people wishing to make a new life.
They were given a large building plot and a
Cheshire Acre(2 acres) in the town fields. They
came from the township of West Derby in about
1208.
